25 years ago on September 11, 2001, four commercial airplanes were hijacked in a coordinated terrorist attack against the United States. Two planes were flown into the Twin Towers, in New York City. A third plane crashed into the Pentagon, in Washington, DC. On the fourth plane passengers and crew fought the hijackers, causing the plane to crash into an empty rural field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In an hour and forty-two minutes, 2,977 innocent people lost their lives. The 9/11 attacks were the deadliest attacks on American soil since the attack at Pearl Harbor.

As a memorial to the tragedy of 9/11 we will pause, play Taps, and offer a moment of silence during the time each of the events that occurred that day. The flame guard will also be marching.

NMMI proudly celebrated 135 years of excellence with its inaugural Founders Day, honoring the vision of Joseph C. Lea and Robert S. Goss and the legacy they began in 1891.

Cadets, faculty, staff, alumni, families, community members, and future students came together to celebrate NMMI’s history, traditions, and enduring values of Duty, Honor, and Achievement. From academic, athletic, and Corps competitions to opportunities for young students to experience NMMI firsthand, the day celebrated our past while looking toward the leaders of tomorrow.

Congratulations to Echo Troop, winner of the inaugural Founders Day Streamer, and thank you to everyone who helped make this historic celebration possible.

Read more about the celebration, its history, and highlights from the day on the NMMI blog: https://www.nmmi.edu/nmmi-celebrates-founders-day/

Here’s to 135 years of developing leaders of character and to the generations still to come.

Be the leader you dream to be! NMMI prepares you with solid academics and personal character development for a bright future.
