The Roxboro Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. is pleased to announce the successful completion of its "Hugs of Love" community outreach initiative. On Friday, August 7, 2026, this impactful project was meticulously executed to enrich the daily lives of residents within the Extended Care Unit of Person Memorial Hospital.

Recognizing a critical need for emotional support and connection, particularly for residents who may have limited local family or social networks, the chapter embarked on this endeavor with the mission to "Wrap every Heart with Love, One Pillow and One Card at a Time." The core of the initiative involved the thoughtful distribution of pillows with an inspirational quote accompanyed with a card, each inscribed an with uplifting messages, affirmations of worth, and select biblical scriptures, designed to impart encouragement, comfort, love, and joy.

The event commenced with a gentle discussion, providing positive reminders to residents that they are safe, profoundly loved, and highly valued. This was followed by an engaging activity where residents had the personal opportunity to select a pillow that resonated most deeply with them, fostering a sense of individuality and emotional connection. This interactive session was purposefully crafted to be an uplifting and spirited experience, encouraging positive interaction and enjoyment among the participants.

Eight residents enthusiastically engaged in the activity, with chapter members ensuring that every resident, including those unable to participate directly, received a hand-delivered pillow and card. This personalized gesture reinforced the message of love and appreciation for each individual. The pillows serve as enduring, tangible symbols, offering a daily reminder that they are enveloped in care and remembrance.

The feedback from the residents of Person Memorial Hospital Extended Care Unit was profoundly positive, characterized by widespread expressions of immense joy, heartfelt appreciation, and deep gratitude for their new, special pillows.

The committee extends its profound appreciation to all members of the Roxboro Alumnae Chapter whose generous contributions were indispensable to the procurement and distribution of these meaningful items. Furthermore, sincere gratitude is conveyed to the Activity Director of Person Memorial Hospital's Extended Care Unit, whose invaluable partnership and unwavering support were instrumental in transforming this impactful vision into a heartwarming reality.

We are pleased to provide an update on a recent community outreach initiative.

On Friday, July 10, 2026, the Roxboro Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. successfully implemented its "Eye See You" project, aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents in the Extended Care Unit of Person Memorial Hospital. This thoughtful endeavor involved the distribution of reading glasses to residents, addressing a significant need within the community.

The event commenced with an engaging session of "Nursing Home Bingo," a spirited activity designed to foster interaction and enjoyment among the residents. Eight residents enthusiastically participated in the game, with each winner receiving a prize. To ensure broad accessibility and enjoyment, the bingo cards were uniquely tailored with easily identifiable pictures, allowing all participants to fully engage in the activity.

This project was inspired by the recognition of a critical issue impacting residents: federal mandates often impose a two-year restriction on the replacement of lost or misplaced prescription eyewear. Understanding the challenge this presents, the Sorority chapter proactively sought to provide a direct solution through the donation of reading glasses, thereby supporting residents' visual independence and daily activities.

The feedback from the residents of Person Memorial Extended Care Unit was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing immense joy during the bingo game and profound gratitude for their new reading glasses.

The committee extends its deepest appreciation to all members of the chapter whose generous contributions made the procurement and distribution of reading glasses possible. We also wish to acknowledge the invaluable partnership and support provided by Jana Hariston Activity Director of Person Memorial Hospital, without whom this impactful project could not have been realized.

Motherhood is a journey where the days feel long and the years are short, yet the love poured into each moment leaves an imprint that lasts a lifetime.

Today we honor our beautiful mothers — those who guide our steps, watch ahead for danger, and pour themselves into others without hesitation. From mothers by birth to grandmothers, godmothers, and every mother figure who stands in the gap, your love is the foundation upon which we stand.

We also hold space for our sisters experiencing the complexity of joy and grief on this day. For those navigating their own experience of becoming a mother, and those missing the presence of theirs — we see you, we are you, and we love you.

To every woman who has ever loved like a mother: your journey has paved the path we walk today. Anchored in the legacy you have built and evolving with the intention you have modeled, we carry you with us in every step forward. Happy Mother's Day!
