Ninety percent of college takes place outside of the classroom. It’s in these fun, unstructured hours that students discover their passions and plan their futures. For SigEps, much of this time is spent with their chapter brothers; it’s where they build close bonds of friendship and become balanced men with a sound mind and a sound body. The Balanced Man Program (BMP) guides their experience.

We're heartbroken to share the passing of Joel Saslaw, a beloved brother, mentor, and one who lived a true "lifetime of brotherhood" for the SigEp community.

Joel was an alumnus of SigEp at Sac State, where his commitment to the fraternity's ideals took root and never wavered. As an undergrad, he led our chapter as Vice President of Member Development. He went on to serve other chapters as Balanced Man Steward, Chapter Counselor, AVC Director, and Carlson Leadership Academy Faculty.

He also dedicated more than seven years as District Governor for Colorado & Wyoming, helping build one of SigEp's strongest regions and touching countless brothers' lives along the way.

Professionally, Joel spent nine years with Gamma Phi Beta International Sorority, rising to FMC Manager, where he oversaw a facilities portfolio worth more than $25 million and became a trusted resource for house corporations and volunteers across the country.

After 11+ years in higher education and fraternity/sorority work, Joel followed his heart into a new calling: teaching. He recently earned his role as a middle school social studies teacher at Excel Academy, a chapter of his life he described as one of his proudest — finding unexpected joy and purpose in his students, staff, and school community.

A rail aficionado at heart, one of his favorite quotes was "Success is a journey, not a destination." Thank you, brother, for a journey that touched so many — the brothers you mentored, the students you inspired, and everyone lucky enough to know your generosity, leadership, and heart.

Rest in peace, brother.
