UC Davis Health offers free mammograms during Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Mammograms can help detect breast cancer early, when treatment is most effective. But for many who are uninsured or underinsured, the cost of a routine screening can be a barrier.

During this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, UC Davis Health is once again offering free mammograms to improve access to lifesaving screening. The program is made possible by the UC Davis Radiology and UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. The screening mammograms are open to members of the community who do not have insurance or who have insurance but can’t afford the cost or the copay. Participating in a clinical trial shouldn’t depend on whether a family can afford a hotel room.

For Sam and his wife, finding a CIRM-supported clinical trial at Stanford for their 6-year-old daughter was a lifeline. But the logistics—juggling jobs in Southern California, caring for their 3-year-old son, and planning for a 60-day stay in Palo Alto—posed an overwhelming financial hurdle.

This is exactly where the CIRM Patient Support Program steps in. Funded by royalties from commercialized therapies, the program provides financial assistance for flights, lodging, food, and transport for under-resourced Californians participating in CIRM-supported trials.

Studies show that up to 30% of clinical trial participants drop out before completing treatment due to travel costs and logistical barriers. By easing these financial burdens, CIRM is helping to ensure that life-saving treatments are accessible to those who need them most, while helping critical clinical trials succeed.

Good morning! We will have a big day at the University of California Davis Institute for Regenerative Cures today! Our Cancer Care Network affiliates from around northern California are visiting and we will give them lectures and tours. It is important to bring the new novel and promising therapies and clinical trials to local sites where the patients live. 🙏

Can treating brain tumors in dogs help improve treatments for people, too?

The new UC Davis Translational Brain Tumor Center is bringing together experts from the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine and the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center to accelerate the development of improved treatments across species.

The center is already enrolling canine patients in clinical research studies that could provide access to advanced care while helping scientists answer important questions about brain cancer.

"This center is something very exciting for us in the brain tumor research and treatment field, and something that is elevating UC Davis to the next level," said Orin Bloch, director of the Brain Tumor Program at UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center and professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery.
