Banned Book Spotlight: Looking for Alaska by John Green

Known for his young adult novels, John Green’s Looking for Alaska is a coming to age story focused on grief, identity, and purpose after Miles “Pudge” Halter deals with the death of his friend, Alaska Young. Having met Alaska in boarding school, Miles must now learn how to navigate through life without his close friend.
Stories such as Looking for Alaska can provide a sense of comfort for those going through a similar situation. However, Green’s novel is challenged across the nation and is actually banned statewide in Utah. This is due to the depictions of sexual content, profanity, and topics of grief. These challenges to erase this novel based on its depictions of real-life events and themes get rid of stories that provide comfort and understanding to readers who need it.
This Banned Books Week remember to practice the right to read. Explore the University Library selection of banned books and check one out today defending the freedom to read: http://bit.ly/4pUABb0
