The FAFSA must be completed each year the student wishes to apply for financial aid. Make sure to include SVSU's Federal School Code on your FAFSA: 002314.

Federal Student Aid (FSA) announced a planned IRS systems outage scheduled for Saturday, January 6, from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET. FSA recommends that applicants wait until the outage is over before completing the 2024-25 FAFSA. Applicants completing the 2023-24 FAFSA will have to manually enter income information during this time, and borrowers applying for income-driven repayment plans will have to submit alternative income documentation.

The 24/25 FAFSA is intermittently available. Hopefully it will soon be working full time. In the meantime, make sure you have a valid FSA ID.

Federal Student Aid is having issues with the 24/25 FAFSA which was expected to be available on 12/31/23. Please do not worry about not being able to start your FAFSA yet. Schools are not going to receive any FAFSA data until the end of January anyway. We will let you know when it is truly available. At this time we do not have any additional information. Happy New Year!

How to Renew the FAFSA (available Dec 31, 2023)

For the 2024-2025 FAFSA significant changes were made to the form, which now opens by Dec. 31. Because of this, the renewal option isn't available, so returning students will have to fill out the FAFSA as though it's their first time.

In the past, you didn't have to have a verified email address to have an FSA ID, and now you need to. If you didn't in the past, then that'll just be an extra step. You can still use your FSA ID, but when you go to enter it, the department will say, 'You have to verify your email address before proceeding.'

After completing the form, applicants will receive a confirmation email notifying them of their submission date, along with an estimated Student Aid Index (SAI) and estimated Pell Grant eligibility. Applicants will receive their FAFSA Submission Summary and a notification once their ISIR has been sent to their selected schools, beginning in late January.

Since institutions will not begin to receive FAFSA data until the end of January, award packages will be further delayed. SVSU hopes to begin sending award notices in March.
