It was a SOUPer evening at the SCSU Community Garden! From garden-grown ingredients to meaningful conversations, tonight was a reminder that community flourishes when we gather together.

Thank you to all the students who joined us for a Serving of Community. Together, we shared a meal, made new connections, and learned about resources that help strengthen our campus community.

A huge thank you to Dr. Tracy Ore for preparing a delicious minestrone soup and fresh pesto using pantry staples like navy beans and chickpeas, along with fresh produce grown right in the garden. Thank you to Backwards Bread Co. for donating fresh bread that helped make the meal complete.

Students also connected with Second Harvest Heartland’s SNAP Outreach Program and learned more about campus support services, including Case Management through Counseling and Psychological Services.

The Huskies Food Pantry uses the Mill Food Recycler to reduce food waste and transform leftover food scraps into a valuable community resource. The Mill system accepts a wide range of food scraps, including meat, bones, dairy products, and produce, and then dries and grinds them into nutrient-rich Food Grounds. The Mill reduces food scraps by up to 80%, keeps food out of landfills, and creates a useful product to share with the community.

Food Grounds can be used to improve soil health in home gardens, flower beds, and landscaping projects; mixed into compost piles to support composting; or shared with community gardens and other sustainability initiatives. Where permitted, Food Grounds may also be used as a supplemental feed source for chickens.

If you would like to receive Food Grounds, please email [email protected]. Each bag contains approximately 4 to 5 pounds of Food Grounds. There is no set cost; however, we kindly ask for a freewill donation to the Huskies Food Pantry to support our ongoing sustainability efforts and keep the pantry stocked to serve students. Together, we can reduce food waste, support local growing initiatives, and strengthen our campus community.

Join us for a Serving of Community on Wednesday, September 2, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the SCSU Community Garden.

Students are encouraged to visit the Huskies Food Pantry before crossing the street to enjoy a free meal of homemade soup, featuring pantry staples and fresh produce grown in the community garden. Bread for the meal has been generously donated by Backwards Bread Baking Co.

In addition to a warm meal, students can connect with campus and community partners offering food access resources and support services. Our goal is to help ensure all students have reliable access to the food and resources they need to thrive both academically and personally.

We hope you'll join us for an evening of food, community, and connection.
