Bethel University Theatre Department

Bethel University Theatre Department Theater engages the imagination and heart as it strives to engage and entertain an audience. Yet, it often raises challenging and unconventional questions

The focus of the program is to provide artistic preparation and exploration for a broad range of individual interests-from those who desire to influence professional theatre to those who plan to use theatre in ministry or education. Four productions a year, ranging from Shakespeare to Children's Theatre to full-scale musicals and more, the Bethel University Theatre offers opportunities for students to engage in all parts of production. Act, build, create, and serve together in a creative community that challenges each other to grow in faith and art.

Mission: Theatre Arts prepares students to bring the "word" to life through purposeful relationships and to tell important life-changing stories. Incarnation is the heart of theatre, making the "word" become "flesh".

Many of you will likely have seen the announcement that all public events at Bethel have been canceled for the rest of the Spring semester. This includes our Theatre productions – How to Achieve in Business with a Phantom on the Roof and Antigone.

We recognize that rehearsal, creation, and performance are vital educational practices for our students, faculty, and staff. The main priority, however, continues to be the health, safety, and wellness of our entire community.

As a way of balancing these important priorities, we are bringing these two shows back to our production schedule this Fall. After all – “The show must go on!” …just a little later than we originally anticipated. We greatly appreciate your continued support and will update you with the specific performance dates as soon as we can.

Be well – stay well! As Theatre continually reminds us, “We’re all in this together!”

Due to COVID-19, we are unsure of what the future will hold for our shows, How to Achieve in Business with a Phantom on the Roof, and Antigone, but we hope to be able to share the beauty of our shows with you soon. We will do everything we can to make this possible. Stay tuned for updates on this page. For now, as they say in Mamma Mia; "Without a song or a dance, what are we? So I say, thank you for the music; for giving it to me." ❤

The cast has been working hard, and are so excited to open today!!!!! Bethel University Theatre Presents - The Vaudeville Shakespeare Players! That’s right – it's the high-brow culture of Shakespeare and the low-down fun of Vaudeville - together at last! Like peanut butter and jelly, like coffee and doughnuts, like pie and whipped cream – in the face! Yes, it's a newly devised version of Shakespeare’s rarely seen classic All’s Well That Ends Well - now with a heaping helping of Vaudeville vivacity! Playing at Bethel University Theatre Nov 7 - 10 and 14 -17. Info and tickets at: tickets.bethel.edu or call 651-638-6333 - Don't miss it!

Appropriateness:
Shakespeare does not fit into our contemporary rating categories, Themes of grace, forgiveness and reconciliation follow missteps and fallibilities on the part of the characters. As with all Shakespeare, there is also some bawdiness - but no more than his other plays, and less than most.

To the Cast and Crew of "I Hate Hamlet": WELL DONE! I came to the show last night and was floored with this production. Honestly, this is one of the best productions I have seen at Bethel and each actor was selected so perfectly for their part. It was so good to sit back and laugh my heart out. To those in the cast that I already know, I am so proud of each one of you and how you have grown! Break a leg on the last two performances and thank you for all your heart and soul that you've put into this project! "Once more unto the breach my friends!" ;)
We so much enjoyed the play that we went two times! Everyone did such a great job. It made me laugh, it made me cry. Beautifully done. Thank you!!

I just read the news about the program being cut. Meg, Brent, I am so very saddened about this. What a loss! You and Rick taught me so much and your program deserves better. I'm praying for you in this, that you would find hope, encouragement and inspiration in hard times.
