We the Asian Pacific American Coalition are deeply saddened and disturbed by the murder of six AAPI women last night in Atlanta, Georgia. We condemn this act of violence and our hearts go out to the victims’ families.
Authorities claim that the shootings were not racially motivated and that the shooter, Aaron Long, committed the violence because of his “sex addiction”. However, time and time again, AAPI women have been disproportionately subject to racial and gender-based violence. The murder of these Asian women was unequivocally rooted in the oppression of women of color.
As Hamline University’s AAPI student organization, we are committed to fighting against the rampant anti-Asian racism that has left many members of our community humiliated, assaulted, and even killed during this pandemic. We ask all of you to stand with us in solidarity as we fight against the White Supremacy and racism that targets our community and other communities of color. If you witness a hate crime, SPEAK UP and report it. If you are able to, donate to AAPI organizations combating anti-Asian racism, or use your social media platform to speak out against the hate crimes against AAPI communities.
We stand with our Asian American community during these difficult times, and will continue to fight against racism towards all people of color. If you ever need support, or feel unsafe, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Only with collective effort and awareness, can we stop Asian hate and racism.
In solidarity,
APAC
