Bethany will be a sophomore studying Plant Science with a track in Agronomy. A fun fact about Bethany is that she spent 6 years in FFA!

My name is Abby, from the UMN Agricultural Education, Communication & Marketing Club! I am currently a senior at the University of Minnesota studying Agriculture and Food Business Management with a minor in Animal Science.

Fun fact about me: I was raised in a dairy farm so I have lots of milk experience! But I can confidently say that I have experience with sheep, hogs, and horses!

In case you missed it: two University of Minnesota students are finalists for Princess Kay of the Milky Way this year!

Princess Kay will be crowned on Wednesday, August 26, before the start of the Minnesota State Fair, after which she will then spend the next year traveling the state promoting Minnesota’s dairy industry at events, engaging consumers, and advocating for the state’s dairy farmers. This year’s finalists will continue the tradition of having their likeness sculpted in butter during the Fair.

Of the ten finalists named this year, two are students at the University of Minnesota: Claudia Frenchick, a sophomore majoring in Animal Science right here in CFANS; and Morgan Morrow, who will begin studying agricultural business with a minor in Horticulture at University of Minnesota Crookston this fall.

This summer, Kai is helping protect Minnesota’s waterways as a Fisheries Invasive Carp Intern with Minnesota DNR East Metro🐟

As part of the state’s Invasive Carp program, Kai is helping tag, track, and remove invasive carp from the Mississippi River. The program works alongside partners including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey, and Wisconsin DNR to monitor and manage invasive fish populations.

Kai is also gaining hands-on experience learning how the DNR stocks, samples, and manages both native and invasive fish species. And one of the experiences he’s especially excited about? Helping out with the DNR pond at the Minnesota State Fair! 🐟🎡

Through this internship, Kai is building valuable field experience while gaining a deeper understanding of fisheries management and the work it takes to protect Minnesota’s aquatic ecosystems.
