Purple Gloves

Purple Gloves Purple Gloves is located in the second aerobic room of the Anderson Athletic Recreation Center (Room 113) during our appropriate class times.

Purple Gloves consists of two separate elements: boxing and jiu jitsu. However, many of our members practice both arts, and so with this approach, Purple Gloves is also about the bridging of these two disciplines. There a lot of misconceptions concerning both boxing and jiu jitsu. For one, many people think that both martial arts are intrinsically about violence. While we do teach you how to handl

e yourself in case of violent situations, the core principle of the practice of these arts is not to learn how to hurt someone. Boxing and jiu jitsu are about self-discipline and respect, and they are both practiced with all the virtues of any other sport. Before you come to us with any misconceptions, let us show you how the sports are actually practiced. Boxing and jiu jitsu are both great workouts, and they utilize a wide variety of muscles, in addition to being great core exercises. Our boxing class is especially noted for its variety. We have a lot of partner-based activities, in addition to the traditional individual ones. The following are some of the workout materials and activities we take advantage of in Purple Gloves:

--Mitt Drills
--Heavy Bag Training
--Aerobic Exercises (jump rope, running, etc.)
--Shadowboxing (with and without weights)
--Footwork Drills
--Ab Exercises

Boxing emphasizes self-defense and exercise, and our program includes absolutely NO sparring obligation. Do what you can and train how you want to. Jiu jitsu is perhaps the more misunderstood of our two practices. Due to the rise of the UFC though, jiu jitsu has grown rapidly in recent years. A simple description of jiu jitsu might refer to it as a grappling martial art with joint-locks and chokeholds. However, this description misses out on many of the specifics of what jiu jitsu is, and it tells an outsider to the sport very little. It helps to know that jiu jitsu is a mental martial art; physical prowess is far less important than technical ability. Practitioners of jiu jitsu have been known to consistently dominate much larger opponents. Jiu jitsu might seem similar to wrestling, but in this manner, things are very different. We recommend outside research, but in the end, it’s easiest for us to show you what jiu jitsu is.

[Note: While it is not mandatory, all students are encouraged to participate in sparring (rolling) after each jiu jitsu practice. If you wish to participate and have a medical condition or previous injury which requires special attention, it is your responsibility to inform your training partners and coaches.]

No equipment of your own is required for any Purple Gloves class. All of it will be provided for you, though we do recommend bringing your own equipment, if you have it already. The only things necessary are gym clothes, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn.
