Will Matsuda '15 fell in love with photography while studying at Macalester, where former photography professor Eric Carroll introduced him to photographers like Rinko Kawauchi. The Japanese artist has become a sort of waypoint for Matsuda. Her images, he says, have the ability to change how you see the world.

“When you experience her images, it can change how you look at everyday objects. The mundane can become spectacular. It provides a new way of seeing,”

He’s photographed skateboarding legend Yuto Horigome for Nike, documented political tension in Washington, DC, for the New York Times opinion section, and captured the beauty of Hermès fashion events.

This past year, the Cultural House community explored intergenerational global solidarity, including through a trip to Cuba with support from Mac’s Racial Justice Project Fund.

Over ten days in January, the students put their education into practice as part of a Witness for Peace delegation, an organization dedicated to helping people in the US understand the impact of US policies in Central and South America. In Cuba, the delegation examined the effects of US sanctions and the embargo in place since the early 1960s, following the Cuban Revolution.
