Gopher Crops and Soils

Gopher Crops and Soils Gopher Crops and Soils Club brings together students at the University of Minnesota that have an interest in agronomy. The group is involved on campus in many ways.
(2)

Every fall there is a barbecue to welcome students that are coming back to campus for the first time as well as returning students. There is also the Pumpkin Sale Fundraiser that the proceeds go to finance the trips that the group takes throughout the year. The trips include a national agronomy conference in the fall, that has a different location every year, and includes students from universities all across the country. During this trip there are tours that educate the students on the agriculture in that area of the county, as well as several business meetings and many mixers that allow everybody to interact with each other. In the spring there is a regional meeting that also has a different location, but in the Midwest, every year that is setup in the same fashion as the national meetings. The end of the year there is another barbecue that is held in appreciation of the faculty and staff within the agronomy department. The club also has a kiosk near the test plots on campus that gives information on Minnesota agriculture. All year long the club holds meetings, the times will be posted on this page as well as emailed to all members upon joining.

Mission: To promote the education of agronomy.

Scott Buboltz was a sales intern with Betaseed Inc. this summer! Scott connected with the growers throughout Minnesota and North Dakota by making farm visits and discussing performances of different varieties of seed. He also met with regional agriculturists from each area of beet production as part of his involvement with seed inventory management and projection throughout the season. Scott said, "Having the opportunity to visit some of the seed production facilities and talking with the Betaseed breeders has also given me a much better understanding of the challenges that growers face and how they are overcome." In the future, Scott is looking forward to gaining more experience in the sugar industry and connecting with growers and industry professionals.
