nnesota’s only veterinary college. Fully accredited, the college has graduated nearly 4,000 veterinarians and hundreds of scientists. The college's faculty is nationally and internationally recognized for teaching and research excellence. Signature research includes infectious disease, genomics, comparative medicine, raptor conservation, public health, epidemiology and dairy, swine, and avian medicine. The college is also home to the Veterinary Medical Center, the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, the Leatherdale Equine Center and The Raptor Center.

Get a closer look at efforts to track disease across wildlife species at the Minnesota State Fair 🪶 🐾

Researchers from the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory have been taking a deep dive into understanding viruses like avian influenza and will be at the Minnesota State Fair to talk about their research findings in how the virus spreads across Minnesota!

Over the summer, the University of Minnesota and local organizations in Austin, Minnesota, helped provide free health services for more than 150 people and pets at a one-day community clinic!

Veterinary volunteers, including CVM alumni, faculty, and students like Micaela Sanchez Cereceda (slide 1), helped examine and vaccinate pets. “I just love community medicine,” Sanchez Cereceda says. “It’s hard work, and we’re giving up our weekend, but it’s to serve the community and provide the best care while practicing the medicine we love. You create such bonds with the people you work with, and with the community.”

Giving teens the chance to step into a veterinarian's shoes and inspiring them to join the field 🩺🥼✨

DVM students Esel Ro, Jack Ji, Aaike Dergance, and Snow Li spent their summer developing and teaching hands-on learning activities at CVM's VetCamp, an interactive education program for middle and high school students. While they spend the camp teaching new skills and imparting knowledge, the DVM student coordinators are also learning, tasked with translating complex medical processes and clinical language into approachable and interesting lessons.

At CVM’s newest clinic, the Companion Animal Teaching Clinic (CATC), fourth-year students lead veterinary appointments. They speak with pet owners, perform examinations and routine procedures, and develop treatment plans.

Sonny Carey (’26 DVM), a recent graduate who completed a rotation at CATC this spring, notes that the level of autonomy this teaching model encourages has been extremely valuable for her intended career path in emergency medicine. “The teaching clinic has made me a better veterinarian by allowing me to independently work up cases with the support of my attending veterinarians and come up with my own therapeutic plans, which helps best prepare me for the future,” she says.

The student experience at CATC is structured as a clinical rotation. The clinic’s rotation will now be part of the more than 60 offered at the college that focus on various animal species and care specialties.

New World screwworm (NWS) has returned to North America after decades of eradication 🐛The University of Minnesota is working with veterinarians and ranchers to strengthen preparedness for future cases!

“It’s an animal health emergency,” says Guillermo Arcega Castillo from the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety. “It affects wildlife, livestock, companion animals and sometimes people.”

Last year, Arcega Castillo was among a group of UMN researchers that received funding from the Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility for a project that seeks to understand how to best support veterinarians and producers in Mexico and Central America. They started with a knowledge, attitudes and practices survey that asked veterinarians and cattle producers in Mexico and Central America to report what they understand about NWS and their experience with preventing and reporting cases. Next, they will visit veterinarians and producers in Mexico, Guatemala and Panama.
