Joanne Slavin talks fiber with CFANS
“Fibermaxxing” is trending and everyone from influencers to food company CEOs see fiber as the next big nutrition trend.
But — it’s more than a trend.
"Fiber is really good medicine. It's the one thing we want people to eat more of,” says Joanne Slavin, faculty member in the Dept of Food Science & Nutrition,. "We've known this forever, and it has to get rediscovered all the time."
Getting enough fiber in your diet has been linked to lower incidence of cardiovascular disease, cancer and Type 2 diabetes. It can protect against inflammatory bowel syndrome, obesity and colorectal cancer. It helps the body flush toxins, lower cholesterol and promote weight loss because it helps people feel fuller while consuming fewer calories.
