The CCE serves as the nexus for community-based initiatives and civically engaged students

The Center for Civic Engagement serves as the nexus for community-based initiatives and civically engaged learning at Salem State University to promote civic engagement, social justice and connection to place. The CCE is responsible for creating, managing, and promoting programs that connect our students, faculty, staff, and alumni to the greater community. Through reciprocal collaborations designed to address public issues and enhance academic learning, the CCE preparing students to understand the importance of community involvement and be well versed in the privileges and responsibilities inherent in citizenship.

Girls on the Run Greater Boston is seeking college volunteers to support teacher coaches at Sarah Parker Remond Elementary School in Salem this fall.

Girls on the Run Boston empowers young girls to build confidence, strengthen relationships, and develop important social and emotional skills that help them succeed.

Where: Sarah Parker Remond Elementary School, Salem
When: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 3:15–4:30 PM through the week of November 16
Celebration 5K: Sunday, November 15, on Boston Common

No running experience is needed — just a willingness to show up, engage with students, and help create a positive experience for everyone.

Join us next Monday, October 5, 2026 from 11:30-12:45 in Forten 123 (Behind Starbucks) on Harrington Campus as we welcome Alrie McNiff Daniels to campus to facilitate a Reframing Aging training. Arlie helps people and organizations shift the way we think and talk about aging and older adults. Arlie, a certified Reframing Aging facilitator has more than 30 years’ experience promoting public health and healthier communities. The training dispels dominate narratives about older people, recast harmful ideas about aging, and tell a more accurate story. Throwback Thursday: It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood for the Salem Food Policy Council's Longest Table Event on Saturday, September 12, 2026. This free meal was catered by our friends Root North Shore in the Point neighborhood.

This event brought together local residents, vendors, and some amazing organizations to enjoy a warm meal together and to discuss ways we can make healthy food more accessible to the community.

Salem state students, faculty, and staff have volunteered for this event two years in a row making it a tradition. To learn more about the Food Policy Council follow them Salem Food Policy Council and sign up for their annual newsletter through their website.

We want to send a special thanks to Northeast Arc for inviting us to participate in their monthly bingo game this Saturday! We had a blast getting to know members and helping folks win some fun prizes. Tne room was packed, the energy was lively, and the competition was fierce! 😁 We can't wait to go back!

We want to give an extra special shout out to Suzanne Ryan for always making us feel welcome and supporting us in engaging with our community in meaningful ways. We are also very grateful for the amazing support of Funda Shafer, Assistant Director of Berry Library for joining us this Saturday! 💙

The City of Salem 's Beautification Committee is looking for volunteers next Wednesday, September 16th from 4 -7pm at Riley Plaza. Volunteers will be assisting the committee as they plant fall "mums" (Chrysanthemums) across several of the gardens in Downtown Salem and Pickering Wharf. Whether you are free the entire 3 hours or can just join for a bit, they can use all the help they can get! Volunteers keep Salem Blooming!🌼🌸🌻
