Interprofessional Healthcare Training at its Best!
SU nursing and respiratory therapy students recently visited UMES to collaborate with physical therapy students on professional roles and responsibilities. Led by Dr. Dennis Klima and third-year PT students, the session featured case studies on cystic fibrosis, total hip replacement, and traumatic brain injury, incorporating clinical tools such as chest tubes and IV lines. The day concluded with the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine’s Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program hosting a “What Matters Most” workshop focused on age-friendly, dementia-aware care and encouraging work in underserved communities.

Teamwork in Action!

On February 18, senior Respiratory Therapy (RT) students participated in an interprofessional Airway Series training alongside clinical education and anesthesia team members from TidalHealth.

Clinical educator Zach Townsend, BSN, RN, CNOR, reviewed OR attire, protective equipment, and sterile field best practices. The anesthesia team then partnered with RT faculty instructor Taylor Zimmerman, BS, RRT, to provide hands-on training in live intubation techniques and patient-specific airway considerations.

This collaborative session delivered valuable real-world insight and practical experience for our future RT professionals.

Making Beautiful Music Therapeutic!
Dr. Cumming's Music 318: Wellness in Performance students explored how making beautiful music can also promote health. For patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), playing the harmonica serves as both creative expression and lung therapy.
Dr. Thomas Lamey, Associate Professor of Respiratory Therapy, discussed the causes and diagnosis of COPD, who was joined by retired nurse Joyce Feetham (pictured), who developed harmonica therapy sessions for TidalHealth Peninsula Regional's pulmonary rehabilitation program.

We have a new delivery at the Henson Medical Simulation Center! A huge thank you to Dr. James Mason for the generous donation of a Laerdal 'Paul' preterm infant simulator. This state-of-the-art, lifelike technology significantly enhances our students' ability to practice preterm infant delivery and resuscitation, addressing a vital area of clinical training and preparedness.
