SU has over 4,000 alumni just from its nursing, respiratory therapy, medical laboratory science and community health programs who are on the frontlines of health care, including working on COVID-19 teams in the local region. They have said that the hands-on experiences made possible in Salisbury University's Richard A. Henson Medical Simulation CenterCenter helped prepare them. www.salisbury.edu/chhs/simcenter

Today’s simulation spotlight features maternal/newborn care: “Maternity clinical in the hospital setting is a unique opportunity for students to work alongside laboring women and then care for these moms and their newborns after birth. While it is the goal that each student witnesses a baby being delivered there is no way to ensure this learning opportunity will occur. Simulation provides students the chance to be with our high-fidelity manikin, Lucina, as she delivers her baby! A different simulation in the maternity course has our students caring for a woman during a postpartum hemorrhage. Due to its emergency nature, in the hospital setting students would be unable to provide hands on care. Simulation allows them to learn teamwork, communication, and nursing care during this high-risk scenario in a safe environment.” ~Dr. Nicole Hall, Professor of Nursing, Specialty in Maternal/Newborn Nursing

Today’s simulation spotlight focuses on the Advanced Life Support Program’s offered by SU’s Medical Simulation Center:

“Students preparing to enter the healthcare field must be prepared to respond rapidly to critical situations and work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals. SU’s simulation center brings students of multiple disciples together to practice alongside one another and learn the importance of effective communication and interprofessional teamwork. In simulation, students have the opportunity to refine their skills and provide advanced life-saving interventions to critically-ill patients in a safe environment. The simulation center offers Basic Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support through the American Heart Association, as well as, the Neonatal Resuscitation Program through the American Academy of Pediatrics. Courses are available to students and community members.” ~ Ms. Catherine Neighbors, Assistant Director, Medical Simulation Center

Today’s simulation spotlight features Pediatric Care:

“I use Simulation with High-Fidelity Manikins in all my Pediatrics clinical courses at SU. While our geographic area is limited in clinical opportunities in acute in-patient care for children due to the low census, low acuity levels, and long distances to the nearest regional pediatric hospitals, the SU nursing students still have a great experience. They are able to care for simulated patients with diabetic ketoacidosis, an exacerbation of asthma, post-op care following a fractured arm, and the administration of vaccines. Throughout all these scenarios they also are exposed to assessment, medication administration, medication calculations, communications, interdisciplinary collaboration, delegation, documentation, and certainly critical thinking. Simulation is a valuable asset in the education and preparation for SU’s Nursing Students.” ~Dr. William T. Campbell, Professor of Nursing, Specialty in Pediatric Nursing

Today’s simulation spotlight features the Communication Skills Toolkits for Nursing Leadership Development:

“Communication Skills Toolkits for Nursing Leadership Development are designed to teach the skills of interprofessional collaboration, conflict management, and advocacy to undergraduate students who will be expected to assume leadership roles to replace retiring nurse leaders. Toolkits include objectives, learner activities, guides for faculty facilitators, and standardized patient experience (SPEs) with trained actors. Students are immersed in complex workplace scenarios to practice their leadership skills in a safe environment. These web-based toolkits will be shared with area hospitals to help new nurses and aspiring nurse managers be more prepared to meet complex client needs in a rapidly changing healthcare environment.” ~Dr. Lisa Seldomridge, Simulation Center Director, Professor of Nursing

Happy Healthcare Simulation Week! Today’s spotlight features the psych/mental health nursing course here at SU: “Simulations are an effective strategy to deliver clinical nursing education in a safe learning environment. With shorter lengths of stay, increased competition for clinical placements, and restrictions that prohibit students from caring for patients deemed to be too unstable, some students may not have opportunities to care for individuals with common mental health issues. Standardized Patient Experiences allow students to practice therapeutic communication and other skills including the management of hallucinations and delusions, addressing safety including those who are suicidal, setting limits with the manic patient, monitoring patients with addictions for signs of withdrawal, providing patient/family centered care for the individual with dementia, and the assessment of trauma.” ~Dr. Debra Webster, Professor of Nursing, Specialty in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing.

Healthcare Simulation Week is almost here! This event is organized by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and is celebrated internationally to recognize the educators and healthcare professionals who use simulation. The event also strives to bring awareness to healthcare simulation to those in our community. To celebrate, we will be distributing “Simulation Spotlights” to feature the experiences that we provide to SU students, local healthcare professionals, and community members from the surrounding areas. We will also be hosting an open house on Friday, September 20th from 11am-1pm. We invite you to celebrate with us by joining us for a tour or following along on our Facebook and Instagram pages!

Learning how to document in an EHR is a vitally important skill, but the cost associated with acquiring access to widely used EHRs is staggering and commercially available educational EHRs are limited in the scope of documentation options. Creation of a low-cost, interdisciplinary EHR by our own simulation coordinator has provided a solution to improve learning how to document in healthcare simulations. #ssih #medicalsimulation #healthcaresimulation #healthcaresimulationweek #hcsimweek18 #electronichealthrecords #ehr #emr #richardahensonmedicalsimulationcenter #salisburyuniversity
