We’re excited to celebrate our latest Intern Spotlight featuring Jonathan Wessel!

Jonathan, a Salisbury University Geography (GIS) major graduating in May 2026 with a Music Tech minor, has contributed to aerial imagery mosaicking for the Maryland Coastal Bays Program and Experience Builder apps supporting City of Salisbury operations and regional homeless resources.

He calls ESRGC “an excellent place to begin my GIS journey,” and his experience highlights how our internships build skills, provide real-world experience, and create impact through GIS.

We are pleased to share the completion of the Historic Coastal Mosaic Project for Ocean City and Assateague Island in partnership with the Maryland Coastal Bays Program

Using historical aerial photographs captured by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1933 – 1964, Salisbury University student interns and our team of mapping professionals transformed more than 1,000 images into 27 georeferenced mosaics, a hosted data resource, and a new public viewer: Shaped by Storms: Historic Coastal Imagery.

This public resource supports coastal education, historical research, and resilience planning by helping users explore barrier island change after major storms and across decades of shoreline movement. We encourage everyone to view these historical mosaic maps and see how Ocean City and Assateague Island have been shaped over time.
