We prepare for the future.
•••
After a successful semester of meeting COVID-19 head-on, SU is already looking ahead to creating a stronger learning and living environment. The initiatives that helped make SU the only USM institution to remain on-campus throughout the fall semester will continue in the spring, and the University is beginning to plan for next steps once a COVID-19 vaccine becomes available. Following the spring semester, SU plans to reopen the campus fully and safely for fall 2021, based much on this year’s successes.

“Like many, I’ve missed the in-person interaction with students, colleagues and others that we all took for granted not so long ago,” said SU President Charles Wight. “I’m confident that commencement ceremonies, Homecoming, cultural events, athletics and more will all take place again soon, and when it does, the expertise our faculty and staff have gained will allow SU to be in the best position to reopen.”

We care about each other.
•••
SU has a lot to be proud of at the end of a successful fall semester in a world grappling with COVID-19. This would not have been possible without the incredible campus community who came together to support each other in a time of need.

Throughout the pandemic, SU has worked closely with community partners to donate PPE to area hospitals, organize a food pantry to help feed families, offer translation services for non-English speaking patients and more. The University also moved quickly to provide its students with physical health check-ins, mental health counseling, meal deliveries and visits for those in quarantine or isolation. With fewer traditional avenues for socializing, SU also provided more recreational opportunities for students, including themed virtual bingo, film screenings and a costume contest to help everyone feel connected with each other.

At SU, students find more than classrooms and a track to their degree. In the past and especially now, our students are proud to call their campus home.

We are critical thinkers.
•••
Allowing the campus to remain open took the efforts of many thoughtful and innovative minds at SU to meet the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to careful planning and swift action, SU was able to become the only institution in the USM to continue on-campus operations throughout the fall semester and was the only institution to conduct its own COVID-19 testing. Many departments, partners and volunteers contributed to these efforts, and their hard work and resilience allowed SU to end the year healthy and strong.

At SU, we don’t just give our students the knowledge they need to succeed in their fields, but the critical thinking skills they need to succeed wherever they go in life.

We are communicators.
•••
Communication and transparency have been key to SU’s success in confronting the COVID-19 pandemic. Early on, SU President Charles Wight hosted virtual town halls to answer questions about COVID-19 efforts and continued to give weekly updates geared towards parents and students throughout the semester. SU’s Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative also created a COVID-19 dashboard to provide real-time testing data that could be viewed publicly on the University’s website. Campus-wide emails, live Q&A sessions and a COVID-19 website allowed SU to communicate openly with the campus community throughout the semester and maintain its mission of creating the safest learning environment possible.

SU is proud to lead its students toward a future where they will become effective communicators in an increasingly connected world.

We are problem solvers.
•••
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States, it changed the way we live, communicate and learn. SU knew there was only one way to go: forward.

At the end of the fall 2020 semester, SU is the only institution in the University System of Maryland to welcome students back to campus after Thanksgiving break. SU organized an on-campus COVID-19 testing site early on and was the only USM institution to conduct its own COVID-19 testing throughout the semester. In total, SU administered more than 25,000 free COVID-19 tests to students and campus members – more than eight Maryland counties.

In addition to keeping the campus safe and healthy, the commitment to providing high-quality education to SU students was an utmost priority. SU gave intensive training sessions and resources to faculty to make a smooth transition to online and de-densified classes, focusing on ways to offer critical in-class experiences for students who required access to labs and hands-on opportunities. SU welcomed students back with 56 percent of classes with in-classroom components – believed to be the USM’s largest percentage.

Due to its early and aggressive approach to combating the virus, SU has become one of the safest places in the state. At SU, we know our students will learn to tackle life’s challenge and emerge stronger.
