Did you know? Medical Laboratory Scientists work behind the scenes to identify parasites like Cyclospora - the organism responsible for the current outbreak of cases in the U.S. Cases have even been reported in Maryland!

Salisbury University MLS students learn how to identify Cyclospora and many other parasites as part of their student laboratories in Clinical Microbiology!

On July 14, 2026 the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a Health Alert Network (HAN) Health Advisory on Domestically Acquired Cyclosporiasis Cases in Multiple U.S. States, 2026 (https://www.cdc.gov/han/php/notices/han00531.html).

This update provides background information about cyclosporiasis, current U.S. surveillance data, and recommendations for clinicians, laboratorians, and public health departments to support recognition, diagnosis, and reporting.
