🚨 COOL RESIDENT(S) ALERT 🚨 This weekend, Dr. Jessica Hall and Dr. Kennedy Jensen ran in the Inaugural Snowbasin by UTMB. Jess completed the grueling 58km race in incredible time, and Kennedy finished 4th overall for women in the 28km! Our residents’ accomplishments clearly cannot be contained by the walls of the hospital. Congratulations to the both of you 👏🏻

We are thrilled to announce that the new integrated vascular surgery residency was just approved by the ACGME! All of the paperwork is submitted to participate in the Match this year and the program should appear in ERAS in 1-2 weeks! We are excited to watch this program flourish, and even more excited to collaborate with new trainees in vascular surgery. The breadth and depth of exposure seen here in Salt Lake is outstanding, and new trainees will have the opportunity to learn with some truly world-class surgeons and mentors.

Congratulations to two of our amazing Chief residents for matching into fellowships in Trauma/Acute Care Surgery and Surgical Critical Care! Dr. Colleen McDermott matched at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and Dr. Abby Alexander matched at Yale University in New Haven. Both of these two outstanding women are going to bring incredible expertise and energy to these lucky institutions next year, and we are thrilled to watch their careers continue to thrive beyond the UofU.

Another successful Pioneer Day celebration in the books for the UofU gen surg residents, friends, and families! It started with a Run Club gathering involving about 25% of the program at 0445, and it ended with safe cycling between 4 host houses, immaculate vibes, and roughly 400,000 calories-worth of carbs.

This past weekend, our students in the Utah Summer Academy for Rising Stars (USTARS) program went out to the Olympic Park in Park City for some sunshine, zip lines, and good times! We are so grateful for Dr. Asare, Daniel Harkness, and the departments of surgery, anesthesia, and otolaryngology for hosting these outstanding future physicians and making this program possible! Our residents are involved in mentoring the students every year, and we love watching these bright minds advance in their careers.

THE Dr. Noah Brown, a stellar soon-to-be Chief resident, just matched into the Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center! Whether he’s navigating challenging complex tumor biology in the operating room or a gnarly ski line, Dr. Brown attacks everything he does with steadfast dedication and preparation. We are tremendously proud of his hard work, and we can’t wait to see him continue to hone his craft on the pathway to becoming an incredible surgical oncologist. Congratulations, Dr. Brown!

Intern Spotlight!! Dr. India Burdon-Dasbach

Originally from New York, she attended Dartmouth for medical school and was drawn to the University of Utah for the early operative experience, the Center for Global Surgery, access to the outdoors, and most importantly the coolest residents with an amazing and supportive culture!

If you she had to choose between being an astronaut or whale, she says “Whale so I could travel the world, speak whale, and meet whale friends”

India brings great energy to the team every single day!
