🧪 Safety is at the heart of great science.

Today, members of the University of Utah community came together for the 2026 STEM Safety Day—an annual opportunity to learn, connect and refocus on creating safer workplaces, labs and learning environments across campus.

Throughout the day, participants took part in hands-on trainings, seminars and conversations covering everything from first aid, fire extinguisher use and laser safety to mental health crisis de-escalation and psychological safety.

What began in the College of Science’s Environmental Health and Safety Office in 2019 has grown into a campus-wide effort to build a stronger culture of safety, preparedness and well-being.

Thank you to everyone who joined us—and to our campus partners who helped make this year’s STEM Safety Day possible! 🥼🔬

⛏️ Why Utah? Why mining engineering?

Located in the heart of the Intermountain West, the University of Utah is uniquely positioned to help lead the future of critical minerals development.

Pratt Rogers, chair of Mining Engineering at the U, explains how our location puts students and researchers near world-class mines and regional partners—and within a state that represents the full mining value chain. The Salt Lake Valley is even home to one of only two active copper smelters in the United States.

From critical minerals to the technologies and resources that power our everyday lives, there’s a role for the next generation of mining engineers.

Learn more about Mining Engineering at the U and discover what your role could be. ⛏️

⛏️ Meet Austin Taylor, a junior in the Mining Engineering program!

One of Austin’s favorite parts of his program is the opportunity to get involved in undergraduate research and gain hands-on experience in his field.

Austin currently researches mine tailings—the materials left over after mining—with a focus on finding ways to recycle and reuse mine waste.

Through research opportunities like these, Mining Engineering students are helping explore more sustainable approaches to the future of mining.

🌍 Learning Abroad Highlight | Zach Butler 🇪🇸

Biology major Zach Butler took his education beyond the classroom this summer through the Spanish for Healthcare program at La Universidad de Oviedo in Oviedo, Spain.

From studying medical Spanish and observing clinical practices at Oviedo University Hospital to navigating Spain solo and connecting with the local community, Zach used the experience to strengthen both his Spanish fluency and intercultural skills.

🦷 With plans to pursue a career in dentistry, Zach hopes to use what he learned to better serve Spanish-speaking patients and bridge language and cultural gaps in healthcare.

“There is no other time in your life when you will have the flexibility to explore the world outside of a standard classroom or career setting. It accelerates your personal growth in ways traditional coursework simply cannot match.”

🇪🇸 Biology major Hana Quinn took her passion for health care and Spanish abroad to Oviedo, Spain!

Through the Spanish for Healthcare program, Hana experienced Spain’s healthcare system firsthand, participated in hospital job shadowing and strengthened her Spanish while immersing herself in a new culture.

“One of the most valuable parts of my experience abroad was the relationships that I made.”

Her advice to other students? “If you have the opportunity to study abroad, do it!”

🐦 What can pigeons tell us about microplastics in our environment?

Biology major Morgan Merrill-McNeal is combining their longtime love of pigeons with undergraduate research to find out.

Through UROP, Morgan is studying pigeon feathers as bioindicators to better understand microplastic exposure and how the surrounding environment may influence consumption.
Their advice to students curious about research? Apply for the opportunity.

“Even if you don’t get in, the only thing you’ve lost is a little time. And if you do get in, it could be groundbreaking—if not for the entire world of science, at least for you.”

⛏️ What if your homework was to build the University of Utah…in Minecraft?

In the new general education course Minecraft & the Real World: Mining, Materials and Modern Society, students are doing exactly that.

Using Minecraft as a virtual laboratory, students are rebuilding the U while exploring where the materials that make up our everyday lives actually come from—from copper and steel to cement and energy. Along the way, they’re tackling the real-world trade-offs surrounding mining, sustainability, land use and critical minerals.

The first-of-its-kind course is taught by Aaron Young, research assistant professor in the Department of Mining Engineering.

🔬 Meet Shelbi Laub, a biology major exploring the science behind tuberculosis.

Shelbi’s research focuses on tuberculosis bottlenecks, studying how populations of the bacteria change and narrow during infection. Her work contributes to a better understanding of how tuberculosis develops and persists within the body.

🧬 Research like Shelbi’s shows how undergraduate students are asking important questions and gaining hands-on experience in the lab.
