Congratulations to Graduate Student Ellie Estrada on the publication of her new article, “Against Disappearance: A Clandestine Stratagem of Community Defense in Community-Engaged Research,” in Social Sciences.

In the essay, Ellie examines how marginalized communities use private, informal, and sometimes hidden forms of communication to protect one another, share information, and organize in response to surveillance, detention, and immigration enforcement. She introduces 'clandestine communication' as a theory for understanding how secrecy, trusted networks, and strategic invisibility can serve as powerful tools for solidarity and community defense.

Congratulations to Distinguished Professor Dr. Kimberly Kaphingst and her research collaborators, Dr. Sean Tavtigian and Dr. Guilherme Del Fiol, on receiving an $8.3 million grant from the National Cancer Institute. We’re also proud to recognize Professor Crystal Lumpkins as a member of the project team.

The grant will support 2DETECT, a multidisciplinary effort at the Huntsman Cancer Institute focused on expanding access to genetic testing and helping identify more people with inherited cancer risk. The five-year project will explore approaches including electronic health record screening, AI-supported tools, and patient-facing chat technology, with a particular focus on reaching populations that have historically had less access to genetic services.

We’re proud to celebrate this significant federal investment in research that brings together health communication, technology, and cancer prevention to expand access to care.

Last night offered an exciting first look at the work of the University of Utah’s newly created Center for Civic Discourse and Debate, housed within the Department of Communication.

The Center partnered with University of Utah Student Leadership and Involvement, with support from the Office of Artificial Intelligence, AI4U, the Office of Residence Life, Digital Matters at the Marriott Library, the One-U Responsible AI Initiative, and the Philosophy Club, to host the first BRAVE Conversations event of the semester: AI, the Future, and U.

The event brought members of the campus community together for a structured conversation about the hopes, concerns, and questions surrounding artificial intelligence.

Led by trained student facilitators, the conversation emphasized listening, understanding different perspectives, and creating space for thoughtful engagement across differences.

New research from communication PhD candidate Aly Hill and Department Chair Avery Holton, with Valérie Bélair-Gagnon of the University of Minnesota, rethinks what resilience can look like for journalists working amid violence, precarity, and disruption.

Published in the Journalism and Media special issue, Mental Health in the Headlines, “Reframing Journalistic Resilience: The Necessity of Networked Ecologies” argues that resilience must move beyond hierarchical models toward networked approaches grounded in relationships, collective support, and coordination across newsrooms, professional organizations, platforms, funders, schools, and policymakers.
