As part of the Kansas State University Agronomy Department, our group is currently focusing on many facets of soil-water-plant chemical interactions including: soil and wastewater remediation methods, sustainable development of urban brownfields for agricultural production, the effect of agricultural management practices on soil carbon sequestration, and the mechanisms behind fertilizer reaction pathways in soils of varying origin. In addition to the research facilities available at K-State, several members utilize synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopy and microscopy laboratories around the world such as Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory (Chicago, IL); Advanced Light Source, Lawrence-Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley, CA); National Synchrotron Light Source, Brookhaven National Laboratory (Upton, NY); and Canadian Light Source (Saskatoon, SK).

We are currently at GeoSoilEnviro (GSE) CARS (Sector 13) at Argonne National Laboratory's Advanced Photon Source, collecting data for our research, which provides molecular insights into field applications of soil amendments to stabilize lead in vacant lots in residential neighborhoods. Microscale elemental mapping guides spatially resolved lead speciation using micro-XAS and micro-XRD to mechanistically understand the chemical processes occurring in soils 18 months after amendment. Harvesting potatoes at Riverside Garden, Wichita! 08/05/2026πŸ₯”πŸŒ±
Did you know? Potatoes (tubers) and carrots (root crops) differ in how they absorb and translocate soil contaminants due to differences in their anatomy, physiological barriers, and transport mechanisms. Some management practices help to minimize the amount of soil contaminants that trasfer from soil to plant. K-State College of Agriculture K-State Department of Agronomy Riverside Garden

A productive day in the field across three different sites, each with its own objective. Today's work included screening soil for potential contaminants, plant harvesting for testing, and performing essential site maintenance.

Every site presents unique challenges and opportunities to contribute to environmental stewardship. We appreciate everyone's hard work in making a meaningful impact, one site at a time.
