100 years of asking big questions about what it means to be human. 🎉

Last week, the University of Utah Department of Anthropology celebrated its 100th anniversary at the Natural History Museum of Utah!

Formally organized in 1926, the department has evolved from a program rooted in Utah, the Great Basin and Colorado Plateau into an internationally recognized department known for its empirical approach to understanding human behavior, culture, evolution and our relationship with the environment.

Today, that work spans field sites around the world while continuing a century-long tradition of asking questions like: What makes us who we are? How do we become the way we are? And what can the past teach us about adapting to the future?

📸 Take a look at a few moments from last week’s celebration—and head to the link to explore 100 years of U Anthropology.

Together with the Tanner Center for Human Rights and Salt Lake City Public Library, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences was proud to co-sponsor an evening with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Brian Goldstone, author of There Is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America.

Goldstone joined University of Utah faculty CoCo James and Alyssa Palmer for a powerful conversation about working homelessness in America and the families navigating rising rents, low wages and housing instability while continuing to work, attend school and care for their families.

Thank you to our co-sponsors, the Tanner Center for Human Rights and Salt Lake City Public Library, and to Salt Lake County Zoo, Arts & Parks and O.C. Tanner for their additional support in making this conversation possible.

📸 Take a look back at a few moments from the evening.
