A crew of fourteen, a cast of two, and three giant puppets traveled to The Taft-Nicholson Center in Centennial Valley, Montana to create Lane Bender’s (Bender 2.0 ) graduate thesis film. This multimedia project brought current and former students together to create an art piece that honors and celebrates the land it was filmed on. Through the help and support of the Department of Film and Media Arts, this group of artists built a kind and collaborative environment and cast the spell of movie magic!  The Taft-Nicholson facilities are increasingly a signature venue for Film & Media Arts work — including scholarly retreats, writing groups, and MFA production sites.

“My relationship with my parents largely exists through phone calls,” says Mihir Pyakuryal, , an MFA candidate in the University of Utah Department of Film & Media Arts. His film reflects that reality. “I Listen for the Sound of Ashes,” Pyakuryal’s short film, uses audio from Pyakuryal’s phone calls with his parents, who live in Nepal, juxtaposed with imagery of the Mountain West, his current home. As it continues to travel around the festival circuit, Pyakuryal shared insights on creation of the film.
