On Monday, Professor Natalie Wadlington’s watercolor class was fortunate enough to host contemporary watercolorist Clara Nulty as a visiting artist.

Nulty began the day by leading a workshop on painting with alternative surfaces, demonstrating to the students that watercolor paints can be applied to more than just paper! She then gave a lecture about her practice, and talked about how she uses watercolor in the expanded field. Finally, she spent the afternoon giving individual studio visits to the advanced watercolor students, where she gave feedback on the independent projects that they’re pursuing throughout the semester.

We were inspired by both her practice and her inventive use of watercolor, thank you for the visit!

ASU Studio Art Faculty Spotlight-
This summer, Professor Surl participated in a 40 day artist residency at Belger Arts in Kansas City, Missouri. The residency provided him with dedicated studio space and the opportunity to work intensively on his current research and ceramic practice.
Located near downtown Kansas City, Belger Arts also allowed Professor Surl to engage with the city’s vibrant art and cultural community. During his residency, he visited museums, galleries, and exhibitions, gaining new perspectives and inspiration that he brought back to the classroom and incorporated into his teaching.
As part of his professional development, Professor Surl also had the opportunity to visit the studio of world-renowned ceramic artist Jun Kaneko. The visit allowed him to experience Kaneko’s large-scale ceramic works and explore the facilities and production processes of a nationally recognized ceramic studio. The experience provided valuable insight into large scale ceramic fabrication and further informed Professor Surl’s own studio research and teaching.
