Texas A&M AgriLife uses livestock guardian dogs (LGDs) as part of our routine sheep and goat predator management. Our goal is to increase the understanding and use of LGD by cooperating with the small ruminant ranching community to develop research and educational activities that reduce livestock-wildlife conflict. The purpose of this page is to share information pertaining to our program.

Wet Nose Wednesday - 🐾 Healthy Feet Keep LGDs on Patrol 🐾
A livestock guardian dog's feet are its most important tools. Daily movement across pastures, rocky terrain, and rough ground can take a toll.
βœ… Check paws regularly for cuts, cracks, and thorns
βœ… Trim nails as needed to prevent splitting or injury
βœ… Keep bedding areas clean and dry
βœ… Watch for limping or excessive licking of the feet
βœ… Address injuries before they become infections
Healthy feet help LGDs stay active, comfortable, and ready to protect your livestock.

I know this isn't LGD-related, but I wanted to share it anyway, since I have never seen a system like this that catches and rotates sheep in one unit. I don't know the manufacturer, but if anyone does, please post it in the comments.

Fun Fact Friday (Dog Treats Edition) - Dogs Taste Sweet Things
a. Although dogs have fewer taste buds than humans (about 1,700 compared to our 8,000–10,000), they can still detect sweetness. This helps explain why many dogs enjoy treats containing fruits like apples, blueberries, or bananas.

Howdy Y'all. We are having a storm in my area, and I may lose internet service or have a poor connection for a live feed. Hopefully, I'll have service for our Q&A Session at 3pm today. If you don't see me live at 3pm, I'll join as soon as I have service or make the post tomorrow.

Tooth & Claw Thursday: Dogs and Hogs
LGDs may discourage hogs from entering livestock areas, but direct confrontations can be dangerous. Large boars can injure or kill dogs with their tusks.
LGD Tip: Do not encourage LGDs to fight hogs. Support them with fencing, pasture design, and hog-control strategies.
