Congratulations to Kim Bishop for getting approval on her mural for the San Antonio Airport’s new terminal expansion project!

The mural, titled “Rise Up”, will be located in the newly expanded area of Terminal A and will feature acrylic on vinyl that will sprawl across the entrance between the old and new areas of the terminal, then continue into 3 gate holding areas. The piece represents the many natural springs and waterways that run through the city and honors the local indigenous history with painted images of animals above.

The UT San Antonio School of Art is proud to have Kim Bishop as an alum and colleague. Kim received her MFA from the School of Art in 2022, and then went on to work as the Assistant Director for PaCE’s Young Artist program, greatly shaping and impacting the art experiences of San Antonio’s youth through innovative and engaging programming.

School of Art Student Advisory Council students are working to raise funds to support student-led programming and activities over the next school year. Together, with your generosity, we can ensure that UT San Antonio remains a hub of creative passion and innovation. Here are the initiatives that you’ll be supporting:

•Student travel for art experiences
•Student emergency funds
•Scholarship awards for undergraduates and graduates
•Exhibition opportunities for students
•Graduate Student support

Donate during our Power Hour to make the most of your donation! On Thursday, April 2 from 10 am – 12:00 noon:

We’re trying to get the most donors. If School of Art has the most unique donors during this time slot, we receive an additional $2000 from the University. In other words, we want as many people as possible to donate to the School of Art Gift Fund Thursday, April 2 from 10 am – 12:00 noon. Help us reach this goal!

Make art while you donate! On Thursday, April 2 from 10 am – 12:00 noon:
Join us in the interior courtyard of the ARTS building on UT San Antonio Main Campus to throw down and collaborate on a new School of Art Banner.
(This may be a messy, yet fun endeavor for all who give, wear your studio pants!)

Not going to be on campus on Thursday, April 2nd? Make your donation from anywhere during that time and then come to Main Campus over the next couple of days to contribute to the new School of Art banner.

Art Between Wilderness and City is an Interdisciplinary contemporary studio class exploring the multi-faceted issues concerning landscape,  center vs periphery, and “the rural” in contemporary art.

The class visited Habitable Spaces to learn about their rural art program, to meet some of their artists in residence, and to conceive and make site specific sculptural projects within the landscape made from materials taken from that landscape.

We love seeing and celebrating collaborations between faculty and local artists! UTSA School of Art professor Justin Boyd, UTSA Arts instructor Casey Galloway-Metz, and local musician Torin Metz chat about their recent collaboration for an exhibition that weaves together art and music, Music for Ottis.

Casey created woven pieces as a response to the lullabies Justin and Torin, known as the music group Spectral Geezers, wrote for her son while pregnant. The trio dive into their experience with the project and the themes they explore in the work.
