Medical Assisting at San Antonio College

Medical Assisting at San Antonio College What will I learn? You will learn both the administrative and clinical procedures required to be performed in the physician's office.

The goal of the Medical Assisting Program is to prepare Medical Assistants who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession. The student will learn manual scheduling, bookkeeping, medical records maintenance, and medical insurance claims. In addition, the medical assistant will be able to function within a compu

terized office management system performing scheduling, billing, collections and electronic medical records. Clinically they will learn and perform EKGs, urinalysis, phlebotomy, injections, assisting with minor surgery, casting, wound care, eye/ear irrigation, urinary catheterization, vital signs, pulmonary functions tests, measuring infants and much more. What can I do with this course of study? The program offers a Certificate Level II and an Associate of Applied Science degree. Medical Assistants can work in a variety of health care settings. The most common is in a physician's office. This occupation is predicted to be in high demand through 2025. Median salary for the San Antonio area is $32,833, and a Texas median salary of $32,833 with a maximum of $37,842. What's special about the program? In 1969 SAC's program became the first accredited medical assisting program in the United States. Through personalized instruction, practice, performance and our state of the art facility, students have stepped out of the classroom and into an actual clinic with minimal transition from student to employee. This program is known for the high performance of its students/graduates, reflected in many laudable comments by the health care community. Our graduates are eligible and encouraged to take the CMA (AAMA) or RMA (AMT) national credentialing exam for medical assistants. Our graduates maintain a very high pass rate on these exams. The Medical Assisting Associate in Applied Science degree program and Certificate Level ll Medical Assisting program are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board.
