Dental Assisting at Alamo Colleges

The Dental Assisting Program is a 2 and half semester, fall-entry only, full-time day program with a max of 24 students.(fall, spring and 6 weeks in the summer) The Dental Assisting program sequences its fourteen (14) technical courses with an additional nine educational to provide each student with the essential knowledge and skills necessary to become a vital part of the dental health care team

to qualify the student to earn their Associate of Applied Science along with their Certificate Level I in Dental Assisting. The program in dental assisting is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education. As one of the accredited Dental Assisting Programs in Texas, the program is committed to excellence in helping to meet the diverse needs of both traditional and nontraditional students. The program seeks to provide each student with the essential knowledge and skills necessary to become a functional dental team member and meet the requirements of the national examining entity. What will I learn? Students will obtain knowledge in specific areas of dentistry to include infection control, radiology (both digital and manual), preventive dentistry, dental materials, four-handed dentistry and dental office management as well as all fields of dentistry. Employment of dental assistants is projected to grow 11 percent from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all occupations. About 44,000 openings for dental assistants are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.
