"I'm gonna keep playing, y'know? When I can't do that anymore, I'll just write music."

"Y'Know?" is a short documentary about the musical life and career of Professor Joe Caploe. Shot and filmed by a few students of the UT San Antonio Film Studies program, this documentary highlights Caploe's experience as a player, educator and musician.

Since he was 12 years old, music has been at every step of Caploe's life. From performing gig after gig, to playing at the renowned Monterey Jazz Festival, Caploe's years in the music industry are an inspiration to many aspiring musicians. Beyond just playing music, Caploe takes his experience in the field into the classroom, teaching students everyday to play with their heart.

Thank you so much to film students Danielle Saucedo, Elissa Carl, Conor Cummings, Nicholas Betts, Eduardo Gonzalez Jr., AJ Arellano, and Sincere Spivey for creating this amazing documentary, and another thank you to Joe Caploe for his work here at the School of Music. We appreciate everything he does and our program wouldn't be the same without him!

We'd like to give another shout-out to Dr. Rachel Woolf for her performance at the Hollywood Bowl this summer!

On this trip, what originally started off as a family visit turned into an invitation to play at one of the most premier outdoor venues in the nation. Recognized for her talent, Dr. Woolf was invited by close friend Elise Henry (Second Flute of the LA Phil) on short notice to play piccolo for their weekend performance at the Hollywood Bowl.

With just a brief long tone session, and a quick read through of "Tchaikovsky’s Marche Slave," Dr. Woolf's performance was truly a spectacular one. Coming full-circle to her roots in Southern California to now performing at this iconic venue alongside a few lifelong friends made it all the more special.

We're so proud to highlight our amazing Dr. Woolf on this performance, and we appreciate everything she does for us here at the School of Music!

Congratulations to four of our amazing faculty for recieving INTRA Research Grant awards over this summer!

The Internal Research Awards (INTRA) program is part of the UT San Antonio Office for Research and Innovation’s coordinated efforts to promote high-quality research and scholarship for faculty. To be awarded these grants is a huge honor, and demonstrates the diligence of our staff and their projects.

Dr. Nicole Cherry: Rediscovering Bridgetower: Virtuosity and Performance in Early Nineteenth-Century Violin Practice investigates that question by reexamining how virtuosity was cultivated, performed, and understood in the early nineteenth century through the legacy of George Bridgetower, the celebrated violin virtuoso of African and European ancestry for whom Beethoven originally dedicated and premiered the Kreutzer Sonata.

Dr. Isaac Bustos: Resonances of Stone is a site specific performance and recording project that explores the connections among music, architecture, cultural memory, and the historic landscape of San Antonio. Conceived for performance inside one of the city’s historic Spanish Missions, the project brings together music spanning nearly five centuries, allowing the natural resonance of the Mission’s stone interior to become an integral part of the performance and recorded sound.

Dr. Rachel Woolf: Prana Milan (Meeting of Breath) is a 15-minute concerto for bansuri, western flute, and string orchestra composed by bansuri master Deepak Ram that brings Indian classical music into a Western symphonic soundscape. Featuring Deepak Ram and Rachel Woolf, the work explores five ragas while weaving together elements of Indian classical, folk, Western classical, and jazz traditions. This concerto creates a shared space for the bansuri and western flute, expanding the concerto form while bridging distinct musical lineages.

Dr. Amy Frishkey: Managing the Passaggio in Americanized Balkan Vocal Pedagogies is part of a book project devoted to the passaggio, a border dividing the vocal range of speech, and utterances above this range. A section of the book examines how the passaggio frames the comprehension and actualization of Balkan singing in North America.

The UT San Antonio School of Music is seeking an Assistant Professor of Instruction/Practice in Choral Music.

We are searching for a passionate educator, conductor, and mentor to help shape the next generation of choral musicians and music educators. This full-time faculty position will contribute to our vibrant choral program through ensemble leadership, innovative teaching, student mentorship, and engagement with the broader music community.

Located in one of the nation’s most dynamic and culturally rich cities, the UT San Antonio School of Music serves more than 300 undergraduate and graduate students and is home to an accomplished community of performers, scholars, composers, and educators.

Spend a week at UTSA learning from experienced mariachi educators while developing your mariachi performance, music theory, vocal techniques, and instrument-specific skills alongside passionate young musicians from across Texas.

The bassoon and oboe studios at are beyond thrilled to announce we have been invited to give a world premiere at the 2026 International Double Reed Society Conference this summer in Oxford, Ohio! We will be performing Extant Flight by on Day 5 of the conference (July 11) at 10am.

This is a big trip, and we need to raise funds to help cover the cost of registration and fees, lodging and food, and travel. If you could, please donate (link in bio) and help us get halfway across the country this summer for a once in a lifetime experience!

This was an incredible concert season, and we're proud to each and everyone of our students for the skill they've displayed through their performances. Thank you to all of our amazing faculty, students, and YOU for supporting our musicians on their artistic journey.
