"Aspirational approaches at community and city-building have served as the parallel to the political efforts to establish a republic dedicated to 'life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.' That post-revolutionary America expanded the frontiers of social and political institutions is widely acknowledged. That the reevaluation of old-world institutions and values would extend to how better to gather spatially in communities is less commonly understood. Each of the chapters explores an effort, cultural trend, or belief about what makes a good neighborhood, a better town, a more humane city, and about some longer consequences of proceeding to build such places." — Alex Krieger, on his book "City on a Hill: Urban Idealism in America from the Puritans to the Present"

Join us for UTSA CACP Speaker Series: Alex Krieger at 6pm Monday, March 2 in McNay Art Museum's Chiego Lecture Hall.

"A beautifully illustrated book that comes out of more than three decades of teaching and writing about the American city, Alex Krieger’s City on a Hill: Urban Idealism in America from the Puritans to the Present (Harvard University Press, 2019) displays that rare integration of practicing architect and planner with scholar that Alex embodies. To a surprising and pleasurable degree, the chapters of City on a Hill capture the experience of sitting in on lectures that are stand-alone but interrelated gems where Alex “reads” a vast variety of American landscapes and cityscapes over four centuries." — Lizabeth Cohen

Join us for a talk with Alex Krieger, FAIA, a Professor at the and a Principal at global architecture and planning firm , which focuses primarily on educational, institutional, healthcare, and public projects in complex urban settings. His talk, “City on a Hill: Urban Idealism in America from the Puritans to the Present,” sponsored by Lucifer Lighting Company and presented in conjunction with AIA San Antonio, is free and open to the public and will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, March 2 in the McNay Art Museum's Chiego Lecture Hall (6000 North New Braunfels Avenue).

One of America’s leading urban planners and scholars, Mr. Krieger is published widely on American urbanization, including his most recent book, "City on a Hill: Urban Idealism in America from the Puritans to the Present", a sweeping history of American cities and towns and the aspirations that shaped them. As he argues in the compelling and richly illustrated narrative, any attempt at deep understanding of how the country has developed must recognize the persistent and dramatic consequences of utopian dreaming. Mr. Krieger will sign copies of his book immediately following the lecture. Attendees are encouraged to purchase books prior to the event through the following online outlets and bring their books to be signed at the lecture.

Join us for a talk with Aaron Betsky, President of the School of Architecture at Taliesin West, the 620-acre Arizona compound designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. In his talk, “Beyond Buildings: Reimagining Architecture,” Mr. Betsky will discuss the need to reuse the structures we already have. The event is free and open to the public and will take place at 5:30pm on Monday, November 4 in the Buena Vista Building’s Aula Canaria Auditorium (BV 1.328) on the UTSA Downtown Campus.

Mr. Betsky argues that architecture should not be a question of building, but of questioning, opening up, and unbuilding. He reasons that, from an environmental standpoint, non-renewable resources and land cannot be wasted to create new buildings. In his opinion, what makes us at home in the modern world is no longer structures that imprison us, but rather the images, forms, and spaces that let us play active and critical roles in our society. His talk will illustrate recent attempts to make sense of our modern world and to offer responses that either come out of the discipline and knowledge that is proper to architecture, or that address those issues proper to architecture.
