The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences is the cornerstone of the Marianist liberal arts Mary’s University’s liberal arts and Marianist education.

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) is the cornerstone of St. With more than 20 disciplines to choose from, the school is the largest on campus. Both broad and in-depth, the school’s program offerings range from the technically oriented fields to the most creative specialties. The school prides itself on its levels of engagement and citizenship, with students and professors who are

valuable leaders in their local communities. In an environment that fosters fellowship, understanding, and real-world problem solving, students learn to adapt to change and apply practical tools to global issues. St. Mary's University, founded in 1852 by Marianist brothers and priests, is the first institution of higher learning in San Antonio and the oldest Catholic university in Texas and the Southwest. Personal attention and powerful academic programs have made St. Mary's, located on 135 acres northwest of downtown San Antonio, a nationally recognized liberal arts institution. With a diverse student population of nearly 4,000 of all faiths and backgrounds, St. Mary's is home to five schools: Humanities and Social Sciences; Bill Greehey School of Business; Science, Engineering and Technology; Graduate; and Law.

Faculty expertise in the news! 🐋

Dr. Heather Hill, Professor and Chair of Psychology at St. Mary’s University, recently shared her expertise with Live Science for an article examining a newly documented orca behavior.

Dr. Hill explains why the orcas’ coordinated actions may have been “less playful and more functional”—possibly helping the pod process food, demonstrate a foraging technique or share resources with younger animals.

In two encounters in the Gulf of California, one orca held a dead sunfish in place while another rammed it at high speed, breaking the carcass into what appear to be bite-sized pieces for younger whales.
