I would like to formally thank the members and supporters who helped me peacefully protest against the actions of Chi Alpha, a Christian student organization, today.
I take pride in attending a university that has protections in place for our community. Despite these policies, however, today was the first time I truly felt unsafe on campus. As a student who pays to attend this university, I should feel safe when I'm walking through campus. I should feel safe when I'm walking to class. I should feel safe, period. This means going about my day without being loudly harassed by preachers who aren't even enrolled at UTSA.
I'm incredibly blessed to be at a point in my life in which I don't allow these shameful demonstrations to outwardly affect me. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for all of my fellow LGBTQIA+ Roadrunners. Today's events were not only deplorable, but incredibly triggering and inappropriate for a university on the path to achieving tier one status. Racism, homophobia, and transphobia have no place at our university.
This is not a matter about our community being against Christianity. Religion serves as a medium for many people to cope with the struggles in their lives. It can be beautiful. That being said, it shouldn't be used as a weapon to oppress and spread hate. It also shouldn't be used as a tool to harass vulnerable students.
Our organization will be filing reports against Chi Alpha. The demonstration today violated multiple policies listed in UTSA's nondiscrimination policy. We've got a recording of the event and I will personally be speaking with students and members who witnessed it. I'm currently familiarizing myself with the appropriate process to deal with this.
That being said, I urge all of the members within our organization to be safe at all times. Report any instances in which your basic human rights and dignities are violated. Here is the link to the form you fill out for any instances that occur on campus.http://utsa.edu/eos/forms/EOS%20COMPLAINT%20FORM%202013.pdf
Here's UTSA's nondiscrimination policy. Read it and be familiarized with your protections. http://www.utsa.edu/hop/chapter9/9-1.html
If you have any concerns, please message me. In addition, if you witnessed the event today, I would like to write down what you saw.
I'll always have your backs, guys.
