While in the process of going through a collection, an unusual artifact was found.

Have you heard of a boatstone or atlatl weight?

A boatstone is rectangular in shape with rounded ends. Regularly used artifacts may appear triangular in shape with a "keel" forming a V shaped groove. Some even have perforations or deeply worn grooves to attach the weight. Although experiments have not yielded conclusive results this artifact is believed to be used for attaching a weight to an atlatl for speed or stealth. Others believe it could be ceremonial. What do you think?

Check out the success of a previous CAR intern!
Daniel Cantu is now an intern in Susanville, California, with the ACE (American Conservation Experience) working for the Bureau of Land Management in the Eagle Lake Field Office. His time in the field has led to the discovery and documentation of petroglyphs, some historic artifacts, like a Sonograph from the 1920s, and some petrified Redwood pieces!

Job Opportunity for the Center for Archaeological Research Director position:
The University of Texas at San Antonio seeks a dynamic leader with an innovative vision for a 21st-century, university-based contract archaeology facility to serve as Director of the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR). Established in 1974, CAR is an active archaeological contract facility, a state-accredited collections repository, a research unit with close ties to the Department of Anthropology, and a liaison with the local community in matters of cultural heritage (http://car.utsa.edu/index.html). CAR’s staff of 21 employees work at the University’s Main Campus in a facility with 12,500 square feet of lab, office, classroom, and curation space. CAR secures more than one million dollars in contracts annually and curates over 15 million items from the Pre-Columbian, colonial, and historic periods.

The new director will oversee CAR’s successful role as a contract archaeology provider and curation facility. They will partner with the Department of Anthropology to provide training and research opportunities for UTSA’s undergraduate and graduate students, including those in the Anthropology PhD program, which emphasizes anthropology’s broad engagement with environmental issues. The Director will be appointed within the Professor of Practice title series in the Department of Anthropology, a title that would allow them to contribute to teaching, student training, and serving on graduate student committees if they wish. Finally, they will further the Center’s community collaborations and commitment to public education.

Hey everyone, Here is our third intern for the fall semester: Brandan Finn!
Brandan is in his senior year of his undergraduate degree at the UTSA Department of Anthropology. His favorite thing to study is the study of human evolution, specifically how the human skeleton evolved. He also really digs (pun intended) how archaeology ties into human history such as how architecture changes, how culture developed with the domestication of plants, and how that affected past cultures.
The best part of his internship so far has been examining how projectile points of the past have evolved and become smaller over time.
Did you know that?!
We are getting quite the waitlist for our internship program next semester, so contact us if you're interested in working with us!

We'd like to welcome our new interns to CAR. We have four this semester who are working in the lab through the UTSA Department of Anthropology!

Hi! My name is Brigitte Wright and I intern at the Center for Archaeological Research. I am a Senior at UTSA majoring in Anthropology with a minor in Museum Studies. One of the most interesting objects I've come across in the collections would be old bullet casings from around the late 19th and early to mid-20th centuries.

If you're interested in volunteering or in an internship at CAR, check out our website and fill out an application!
