Join us this Thursday for the 74th annual Red Mass marking the new judicial year. Members of the San Antonio legal community, St. Mary’s Law and the Catholic Lawyers’ Guild gather to pray for God’s blessings and guidance on the administration of justice. People of all faiths are welcome. The processional with representatives from legal organizations begins at 5:45 p.m., and Mass will begin at 6 p.m. at San Fernando Cathedral, 115 Main Plaza.

The Fourth Court of Appeals and the San Antonio Bar Association are inviting the law community to a memorial service for Chief Justice (Ret.) Alma Lamar Lopez Cavazos (B.B.A. '65, J.D. '68), who was the first Hispanic woman to serve on the Fourth Court of Appeals. She was later elected Chief Justice, becoming the first Hispanic woman in that role on an appellate court in the U.S. The memorial service begins promptly at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in the Bexar County Courthouse, Double Height Courtroom, 100 Dolorosa St.

St. Mary's Law mourns the passing of Ana M. Novoa, Professor Emeritus of Law, who was the first Mexican American woman to receive tenure at the School of Law. Hailed by her former students as a fierce trailblazer and advocate for the poor and disenfranchised in the community and along the border, Novoa taught clinical education for 25 years. Her legacy lives on in the work of the Center for Legal and Social Justice, where faculty and students continue her life-changing work. Novoa is remembered for supporting and inspiring law students to realize their potential.
