Twenty-Five Years Ago Today

Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) was the official U.S. military designation for the Global War on Terrorism and the primary counterterrorism campaign in Afghanistan launched in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Key Details

• Start Date: October 7, 2001
• End Date (Afghanistan Combat Mission): December 28, 2014
• Commanders & Leadership: Initiated under President George W. Bush; military operations commanded through U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM), initially by General Tommy R. Franks.
• Primary Objectives:
• Dismantle al-Qaeda's infrastructure in Afghanistan.
• Remove the ruling Taliban regime that harbored al-Qaeda.
• Capture or kill al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden (who was later killed by U.S. forces on May 1, 2011, in Pakistan).

National POW/MIA Recognition Day is the third Friday in September; established in 1979 through a proclamation signed by President Carter. It honors those who were Prisoners of War and those who are still Missing in Action. It is a call for the Nation to honor those who were held captive and returned, as well as those who remain missing. You are not Forgotten.
