It is with great sadness that we must inform you of the passing of our former colleague, Dr. Thomas J. Bellows.

For over 40 years, Tom served the Department and the University with distinction as a Professor of Political Science and as Director of the Division of Social and Policy Sciences. He was an active scholar and instructor, teaching both Comparative Politics and Government and Politics of Southeast Asia courses as recently as the 2021 Spring Semester. Prior to joining UTSA, Tom began his academic career at the University of Arkansas, where he rose from Assistant Professor to Professor and served as Department Chair.

Tom held a B.A. from Augustana College, an M.A. from the University of Florida, and a Ph.D. from Yale University. His areas of specializations were in Comparative Politics, Asian Politics, International Relations, and American Politics. A globally recognized expert on East Asian and Southeast Asian politics and governance, Tom was the author or co-author of several books and numerous scholarly journal articles, primarily on Singapore's political system, political development in Taiwan, and security issues in the Indo-Pacific region. Tom served as the Editor of the American Journal of Chinese Studies as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association for Chinese Studies.

Our hearts and thoughts go out to the Bellows family as well as to all of those whose lives and careers were touched by his influence.
