UT San Antonio’s College of Sciences faculty extend their passion for science beyond the classroom, creating opportunities for people around the world to experience the wonder of a total solar eclipse.

Department of Physics and Astronomy faculty members Angela Speck, PhD, professor, and Lindsay Fuller, PhD, assistant professor of instruction, donated over 6000 pairs of eclipse glasses to several institutions in Europe for people to safely enjoy the eclipse that occurred on August 12, 2026.

New Faculty Welcome: Meet Dr. Kelly Lozano Ortiz, an Assistant Professor of Instruction joining the Department of Biology, Health, and the Environment this fall. After recently completing her PhD in neuroscience at UT San Antonio, Lozano Ortiz is excited to continue her career as a Roadrunner in research and Mentorship.

"I have experienced firsthand the impact the UT San Antonio community has had, and I wanted to become part of the team that can influence the next generation and lead them with grace to their future careers," said Lozano Ortiz.

New Faculty Welcome: We’d like to give a warm welcome to Dr. Yuk Tung Liu, an Associate Professor of Instruction joining the Department of Physics and Astronomy this fall. Coming from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Liu’s expertise lies in relativity, computational astrophysics, and black hole simulations.

"I am drawn to UT San Antonio because of its combination of strong research activity and commitment to student success. I am excited to contribute to a department where teaching and scientific engagement are both highly valued," said Liu.

We're excited to welcome Dr. Ahmed El Belasy, Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. Joining us from Mansoura and Oklahoma State University, El Belasy brings expertise in sedimentary geology and sequence stratigraphy. His research connects these areas to energy-transition applications and sustainability.

"I was especially attracted to UT San Antonio's role as a nationally recognized R1 public research university that serves a large and diverse student body. I look forward to helping students connect geoscience concepts with real-world issues," said El Belasy.

What if the key to clean energy was in a material's imperfections?

Researchers in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UT San Antonio have challenged a longstanding assumption in materials science, discovering that tiny imperfections in material can dramatically improve the performance of fuel cells.

The breakthrough could pave the way for more efficient, durable and commercially viable clean-energy technologies.

Meet Ed Johns, Senior Program Manager for Graduate Studies. In 2024, Ed joined the Department of Chemistry, where he worked closely with graduate students and college leadership to improve processes, communication and student success before transitioning into his current role in the College of Sciences Dean’s Office.

"Whether it's students, staff or faculty, my priority has always been to help those that need it," said Ed. "We are lucky within COS to have such fantastic colleagues within each and every department, and working with everyone that I do towards the common goal of supporting our students makes this college so nice to work in."

Meet Keith Herndon, a first-generation UT San Antonio alumnus who remains deeply involved in the university community.

Graduating from the College of Sciences in 1981, Herndon worked in information technology with Shell Oil for 36 years. Today, he continues to be involved with the development of UT San Antonio.

"UT San Antonio is essential to the city and the surrounding community, but I would also like to see its national reputation continue to grow,” Herndon said. “Athletics can help bring visibility, but the university’s academic programs and research are what will ultimately strengthen its reputation and expand its impact."
