✨ We have officially kicked off the Fall Semester at San Bernardino Valley College and Crafton Hills College!

Our Board of Trustees, Chancellor, faculty, staff, and students came together last week to celebrate a new year and the work ahead, expanding access to affordable, high-quality education and preparing the next generation of Inland Empire leaders, professionals, first responders, and skilled workers.

Today, Board Chair Dr. Nathan Gonzales spoke to the Loma Linda Chamber of Commerce and met Deborah and her daughter, Samantha.

Deborah attended Valley College. Samantha is taking classes at Crafton Hills College.

As we talked, Samantha shared that algebra never really clicked for her until she enrolled in Professor Jodi Hanley’s class. Today, she’s taking calculus and earning straight A’s.

Stories like theirs remind us that opportunity doesn’t always require going far away. Sometimes it’s right down the street.

For generations, local families have relied on Valley and Crafton because we are affordable, accessible, and deeply connected to the communities we serve. Since 1926, our students have gone on to become nurses, firefighters, first responders, educators, business owners, and highly skilled technicians who help power the Inland Empire’s economy.

We hear stories like this everywhere we go, and we never get tired of hearing them. In fact, two out of every three people in our community have some connection to one of our colleges. Deborah and Samantha are two of them. 💚💛💙

Statement by SBCCD Chancellor Dr. Diana Z. Rodriguez on the Passing of Former SBCCD Trustee, Educator, and Public Servant Dr. Judith Lopez Valles:

“We join the San Bernardino community in mourning the passing of Dr. Judith Lopez Valles, one of SBCCD’s own and one of the great pillars of this city.

Dr. Valles’ story was rooted at San Bernardino Valley College. She came to SBVC as a student, where professors saw her promise and encouraged her to ‘dare to compete.’ She never forgot that encouragement. She carried it with her as she returned to serve generations of students as an SBVC professor and administrator, later served on the San Bernardino Community College District Board of Trustees from 1993 to 1998, and remained a lifelong champion for our college, our students, and our community.

And while we knew her as one of our own, Dr. Valles’ service reached far beyond our district. In 1988, she became the president of Golden West College, becoming the first Latina president of a California Community College – and the first Latina to lead any college or university in California.

She also made history as the first Hispanic mayor of San Bernardino and was also the city’s second female mayor.

At SBVC’s Centennial Gala this year, Dr. Valles was among a small group of distinguished honorees recognized for her extraordinary service. I am grateful we had that opportunity to honor her while she was with us, because she deserved every bit of it.

I will remember Dr. Valles as a mentor, a friend, and a model of courage, grace, and purpose. Her legacy was not only in the positions she held, but in the people she lifted and the doors she opened for others.

SBCCD and San Bernardino are better because Dr. Valles lived here, led here, taught here, and loved this community.

Please join me in keeping her family, loved ones, former students, colleagues, and all who were touched by her life in your thoughts.

May she rest in peace and power!”

For 100 years, our colleges have helped local students save money, learn real skills, and prepare for good jobs close to home.

Now we’re asking our community to help guide how we keep that promise for the next generation.
