The UC San Diego Department of Cognitive Science is delighted to announce the 2026 winners of the Dr. Robert Glushko ‘79 Honors Thesis Prize in Cognitive Science. Andrew Gibson, Caroline Hall-Scherr and Zoe Kothari all recently graduated with honors after completing mentored research projects, while maintaining outstanding academic grades. The title and a brief description of their work is provided below.  A monetary prize is awarded to each of these students and is made possible by the generosity of a fund established in 2021 by alumnus, Dr. Robert Glushko.

Andrew Gibson:

Thesis title: “Social Context Impacts Rhythmic Coordination Within Affective and Interoceptive Circuits”

A companion changes how brain regions work together during fear. Rats who are accompanied during threat spend less time freezing, yet show more coordinated rhythmic activity between affective and interoceptive brain regions.

Caroline Hall-Scherr:

Thesis title: “Use of Acoustic Cues in the Perception of /ɹ/ and /w/ in Child Speech: Do Adults and Children Listen in the Same Way?”

My project focused on how children and adults understand child-produced R and W sounds and how the acoustic properties of the speech signal inform perceptual decision making. Development seems to play a role: adults robustly utilize acoustic cues to determine speech sound identity while children are less sensitive to those same cues.

Zoe Kothari:

Thesis title: “The Cognitive Consequences of Instruction Design in Model Assembly”

My thesis investigates how the affordances of virtual interactive and static printed instructional diagrams affect the model assembly experience. Through a within-subjects study, I examined both traditional performance measures and qualitative aspects of how cognition was distributed across the workspace system.

The UCSD Cognitive Science department is excited to announce the recipients of this year’s Cognitive Science Teaching Awards for the 2025-2026 academic year!

This year we had two award categories. The Outstanding Teaching Award, for which awardees were nominated by departmental colleagues, and the Student Choice Awards, for which all of our undergraduate majors were asked to vote for the TA and instructor who made the biggest impact on them.

Congratulations to all recipients! 🧑‍🏫🥳🎉

Can you tell if you’re chatting with a human or AI? 💻

A new UC San Diego study found that advanced language models can pass a rigorous Turing test, with one model judged “human” 73% of the time in live conversations. The key: giving AI a specific persona to mimic human tone, behavior and even mistakes.

The research highlights a shift in how we think about artificial intelligence. It’s no longer just about knowledge or accuracy, but about humanlikeness and social behavior.

The implications are significant, especially when it comes to trust, online interactions and the potential for deception.

A live head to head test, human vs machine! A study conducted by Cameron Jones, who earned his doctorate in Cognitive Science from UC San Diego in 2025, and Professor Ben Bergen asks whether a machine can imitate human conversation enough to convince us they're real. Can you tell?

A new UC San Diego study unveils the first empirical evidence that a modern artificial intelligence system can pass the Turing test — a major scientific benchmark that asks whether a machine can imitate human conversation so convincingly that people can’t reliably tell it apart from a real perso...

Meet Kellina Tran, one of the incredible undergraduate advisors in the UCSD Cognitive Science department! 🎓😁

Kellina helps keep everything running smoothly for students, whether it’s navigating VAC, mapping out Annual Academic Plans, finding textbooks, exploring the Honors Program, or making sense of syllabi. If there’s a question, she’s probably already three steps ahead with the answer. 🧠

Fun fact about Kellina: She types using only her two index fingers and thumbs. ⌨️👆

Need guidance or just a helpful nudge in the right direction? Kellina’s got you covered, reach out on vac.ucsd.edu and [email protected] or stop by and say hi! 👋
