For Janelle Temnick, every step is a thank you. 💗

After facing breast cancer, months of chemotherapy and multiple surgeries, the SDSU Aztec Shops employee is now cancer-free and walking for the family and friends who helped carry her through it all.

On Oct. 18, thousands will come together at SDSU Mission Valley for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, this year with a new 5K run alongside the signature walk.

Some will celebrate survival. Some will honor loved ones. All will show what it means to stand together. For more information about the walk and new 5K run, visit the Making Strides of San Diego website: https://bit.ly/4xoZlf0

A new academic year means thousands of new stories are beginning at SDSU. ❤️

This fall, SDSU welcomes 13,640 new students, including 6,808 first-year students, 4,021 transfer students, 2,290 graduate students and 521 SDSU Imperial Valley students. They come from 69 countries and across the U.S., range in age from 16 to 76, and our first-year students arrive with an average 3.83 high school GPA.

As we welcome our newest Aztecs, we’re also celebrating new opportunities in STEM, artificial intelligence and more.

Research is strongest when the people most affected help shape it.

Led by SDSU’s Shira Goldenberg, an international collaboration published in The Lancet Public Health is broadening how researchers understand s*x workers’ health, looking beyond HIV and s*xually transmitted infections to mental and reproductive health, workplace safety, violence, stigma and access to care.

Importantly, s*x workers and s*x worker-led organizations helped shape the research and recommendations, bringing lived experience directly into the process.

Sometimes finding your place at SDSU starts with one conversation. ❤️🖤

At recent tabling events, students met organizations from across campus, explored new interests and discovered communities where they can connect and belong.

With more than 300 student organizations at SDSU, there are plenty of opportunities to build friendships, develop new skills and make campus feel like home.

SDSU was awarded $3.95 million through the California Jobs First Regional Investment Initiative to help strengthen and scale San Diego’s national security industry, part of a $48.5 million statewide investment announced by Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Jobs First Council.

SDSU will be using nearly $4 million in funding to bring together a new startup accelerator, an investment fund, and equipment and facilities for rapid prototyping and advanced manufacturing into the SDSU Mission Valley Innovation District. This funding builds on the state’s prior investments into our region, enabling us to implement projects and create jobs that reflect San Diego’s strengths in innovation, maritime, and national security.

Together, we’re building resilient communities that will continue to move our region – and
our state – forward.

SDSU is building on more than a century of impact with an ambitious vision for what comes next.

At the 2026 All-University Convocation, President Adela de la Torre reflected on SDSU’s momentum, including R1 research status, continued development at SDSU Mission Valley and SDSU Imperial Valley, and a new era in the Pac-12. As she shared, “If we do not ask big questions, we will never arrive at big answers.”

As the 2026-27 academic year begins, our focus remains clear: strengthen the value of an SDSU education and its power to transform individuals, families and communities.

There’s nothing quite like the first day of classes at SDSU. 🎒❤️

For some students, today is the beginning of a brand-new chapter. For others, it’s another step closer to graduation. And for families, it’s a day filled with pride, excitement and maybe a few extra texts asking, “How was your first day?”

Welcome back, Aztecs. We’re glad you’re here.

Mara Madrigal put her dissertation on hold for something she believed couldn’t wait: helping save young lives.

The SDSU educational leadership doctoral graduate helped lead the effort behind a new California law expanding access to su***de prevention training for school staff, students, parents and caregivers.

“When you lead with compassion and understanding, people will come with you,” Madrigal said.

Her next chapter? Keep pushing for a stronger education system for every student who needs it.

The hardest thing to unpack on move-in day might be all the emotions. ❤️🖤

Move-in is a big moment for our newest Aztecs, but we know it’s a big one for their families, too. Behind every packed suitcase and residence hall goodbye are years of encouragement, sacrifice and love that helped bring them to SDSU.

To the families heading home with a little more room in the car today: Thank you for trusting us with someone so important to you. They’ll always have a home with you, and now they have one here, too.
