This summer, SDSU’s School of Public Health welcomed 34 local high school students for the first Pathways to Public Health: Empowering the Next Generation workshop.

In partnership with the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency’s Live Well Center for Innovation & Leadership, students explored public health through hands-on activities, lab visits and conversations with professionals in the field. A new partnership is creating opportunities for learning, collaboration and community impact across the U.S.-Mexico border. SDSU has signed a memorandum of understanding with Universidad Intercultural de Baja California, Baja California’s only intercultural university, which expands access to higher education for Indigenous, rural and migrant communities.

During their visit to SDSU, UIBC leaders toured the School of Nursing’s Learning Lab and connected with faculty as both universities explored future collaboration in nursing and other disciplines. Three SDSU School of Public Health graduate students are being recognized for their research potential and academic achievement. Troy Tektonopoulos, Kendy Arana and Alicia Agas each received a competitive $10,000 Master’s Research Scholarship for the 2026-27 academic year.

Their work spans chronic disease prevention, environmental health, water quality and more, with a shared commitment to improving community health. Last Friday, graduate students across SDSU’s College of Health and Human Services came together to learn the way they’ll work in their future careers: as a team.

Through Interprofessional Education training, students in Nursing, Physical Therapy, Athletic Training, Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology and Social Work are building skills in teamwork, communication and collaborative care. CHHS is preparing the next generation of health and human services professionals to work across disciplines and provide safer, more effective, patient-centered care.

CHHS is innovating in Interprofessional Education! More than 200 students will convene in their second semester of a longitudinal IPE program during semester #2 to examine complex cases across nursing, athletic training, physical therapy, social work and speech language pathology.

As the first school of social work in the CSU system, SDSU continues to prepare future professionals through a 1-year Advanced Standing Program (38 units) or a 2-year full-time (60 units) program that has 3- and 4-year part-time pathways. This recognition reflects the strength of SDSU’s graduate social work education and our commitment to preparing professionals who make a meaningful impact in the communities they serve.
