Behner Stiefel Center for Brazilian Studies Interdisciplinary and international program intended to expand knowledge of Brazil among faculty and students at SDSU as well as the greater community.

What happens when fishing nets catch more plastic than fish?
In Guanabara Bay, artisanal fishers are living through profound environmental transformations. Plastic bags damage boat engines, discarded tires tear fishing nets, and waste accumulates across fishing grounds. At the same time, some fishers are being hired to remove the very pollution that threatens their livelihoods.
"Fishing Plastics" explores how waste is reshaping labor, territory, and identity in one of Brazil's most iconic coastal ecosystems.
These stories remind us that pollution is not only an environmental issue—it is also a social, economic, and cultural one.

Looking back at the research talk “Fire and Punishment: Enforcement Incentives and Strategic Fire Use in the Brazilian Amazon,” presented by Anna Costola Pede, PhD Candidate at UC Santa Barbara.

The talk explored how satellite monitoring and environmental enforcement can shape deforestation strategies in the Brazilian Amazon, including how changes in monitoring technologies can influence the ways land clearing is carried out.

What do plants, landscapes, hair, and the human body have in common?
On October 2, Professor Jeffrey Hoelle, from the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, will discuss “Cultivated: Plants, Hair, and the Aesthetic of Control.”
Drawing on ethnographic research in the Brazilian Amazon and beyond, Hoelle explores how cultivation shapes both landscapes and bodies, connecting cattle pastures, agricultural fields, lawns, hair salons, and everyday ideas about what should be considered “natural.”
