SDSU Research Foundation (SDSURF) is a non-profit auxiliary organization chartered to further the educational, research, and community service objectives of San Diego State University (SDSU). SDSURF currently administers approximately 1,500 active grants and contracts and has annual revenues of $230 million. With 180 central support staff and over 2,000 grant and contract project employees, it is the largest auxiliary in California. Governed by a board of directors, SDSURF provides grant lifecycle services including proposal budgeting and submission, award administration, human resources, payroll and purchasing services, and providing facilities to house research projects. From account set-up and administration through close-out and final audit, our staff ensures compliance with federal, state, CSU, and SDSU regulations and that funds are spent appropriately to achieve sponsor objectives. SDSU is recognized as an R1 institution by the Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education. R1 designation is granted only to doctoral degree-granting universities with “Very High Research Spending and Doctoral Production,” placing SDSU in the top 5% of research universities in the U.S.

The development will include affordable housing units and a walker-friendly neighborhood, and it marks a landmark moment for the California State University system as one of the first affordable housing developments advancing under the 2024 Faculty and Employee Housing Act.

San Diego State University geography doctoral student Megan Ward-Baranyay, in collaboration with the NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, led a study published in AGU Advances that found pre-fire fuel conditions were the strongest predictors of burn severity in three January 2025 Los Angeles County wildfires. Using NASA satellite data, researchers showed that understanding vegetation conditions before ignition may improve wildfire risk assessment, land management, and community preparedness.

SDSU Alumni, Julian Preciado, a graduate of SOUTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL - San Diego, CA, and Imperial Valley College, was named valedictorian of both the Lamden School of Accountancy and Fowler College of Business at San Diego State University after completing his degree in just three years with a 3.95 GPA. The achievement came amid the loss of his mother and while navigating CountDigital, his consulting firm that assists CPA firms and their clients with complex blockchain transactions and digital asset accounting.

Kitty Lui, a joint doctoral student at San Diego State University and UC San Diego, and associate professor of neuroscience at UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Sarah Banks, published a study in the Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease examining how poor sleep quality is associated with increased Alzheimer’s disease risk in older women with higher genetic predisposition.
