The HTH Graduate School of Education (GSE) —the nation's first graduate school situated entirely within a K-12 learning community—supports teachers, educational leaders and school founders in reimagining schools with a focus on equity, deeper learning and shared leadership. The GSE is embedded within the 16 High Tech High K-12 schools, providing a rich context for personalized, hands-on learning and the integration of theory and practice. The GSE’s commitment to diversity, equity and integration is central to the mission, as are its aspirations to serve as a hub for antiracist/anti-bias and deeper learning practices within higher education. The GSE functions as a full adult learning community with graduate degree programs, fellowship programs, the Center for Research on Equity and Innovation, and a range of professional learning offerings.​ ​ The GSE offers two master’s programs: an M.Ed. in Teaching & Learning (T&L) through the Teaching Apprenticeship Program (TAP), which also serves as a pathway for candidates to earn a Multiple Subject or Single Subject California Preliminary Teaching Credential. The GSE also offers the New School Creation Fellowship for educational leaders committed to designing and founding new schools focused on equity, deeper learning and innovation.

Strong school leadership starts with a strong foundation in the earliest years of learning. 🌱

Earlier this month, HTH GSE Dean Dr. Kelly Wilson and High Tech High Director of Teaching and Learning Marquita Griffith joined education leaders in Chicago for the P3 Principal Preparation Convening, hosted by Dr. Kristie Kauerz of the National P-3 Center and Dr. Steve Tozer.

The convening brought together district, higher education, and state policy leaders from across the country to explore how we can strengthen the systems that prepare and support elementary school principals to lead high-quality teaching and learning, from early childhood through the elementary grades.

We left inspired by the conversations, the collective commitment to strengthening school leadership, and the opportunity to create lasting impact by investing in our youngest learners.

Because what happens in the earliest years of education can shape a lifetime of learning. 💛

Join us Tuesday, October 20 at 6:00 PM PT for our next San Diego Teacher Residency Information Session, featuring a live conversation with two current SDTR residents, Amber Hendren and Aaron Nguyen! 💙

Amber came to teaching after first joining the High Tech High community as a parent and Academic Coach, and brings more than 30 years of experience as a musician and instructor to her work as an educator. Aaron’s journey is a full-circle HTH story: he entered High Tech High as a 6th grader and is now back in the network as a resident teacher!

They’ll join us to share candidly about what residency life is actually like, from learning alongside a cooperating teacher and balancing coursework with classroom life to preparing to lead their own classrooms.

We’ll also cover:

There’s something powerful about realizing the challenges you’re facing aren’t yours to solve alone.

For Mitch Fowler, Director of IT & Grants at Battle Creek Public Schools, being part of the National Attendance & Engagement Meta Network meant being surrounded by people deeply committed to improvement, and finding both support and a push from others doing the work.

That shared learning didn’t make the challenges any less complex. But it did leave Mitch with something important: greater agency to tackle them.

Because sometimes the breakthrough starts by getting in the room with people asking the same hard questions. 💛

🌎 Learning across classrooms, communities, and borders.

This month, we’re excited to welcome back our friends from Friends of HTH Israel for their annual visit to High Tech High!

This year’s delegation brings together 40 educators, school leaders, and municipal partners representing Jewish and Arab communities for a week of learning, connection, and shared practice.

And this partnership goes far beyond a campus visit. 💛 We’ve had the incredible opportunity to see HTH-inspired practices come to life in schools in Israel — adapted across languages, contexts, and communities.

Throughout the week, our visitors will spend time learning alongside the HTH community, exchanging ideas, visiting classrooms, and building relationships around what education can make possible.

We’re grateful for another opportunity to learn with one another — and we can’t wait to share a few moments from their time on campus. 🌍✨

It’s more than mastering content. Deeper Learning is about creating experiences that help young people build the skills they need to think, communicate, collaborate, and keep growing.

At the heart of the work are six core competencies:

🇯🇵🌎 From San Diego to Japan, and back again! We recently had the joy of welcoming 39 high school educators, school leaders, and district administrators from Japan to High Tech High for three days of learning, connection, and design.

The visit was led by HTH GSE M.Ed. alum Shinya Hiraoka, founder of Stapia, Inc., who has been bringing groups of Japanese educators to our schools for the past two years as part of his work to transform education in Japan. 💛

Throughout their time at our Point Loma schools, the delegation explored learning at HTH and turned that inspiration into action, developing project designs of their own to bring back to their educational communities.

One of our favorite moments came during the culminating exhibition, when our Stapia friends were joined by GSE faculty and our entire San Diego Teacher Residency cohort. Together, the groups shared their work, exchanged feedback, and celebrated learning across languages and cultures. One of our residents even shared a Japanese translation of the stories they wrote! 🥰

The closing exhibition was a beautiful example of what we hope to create in our schools: learners and teachers learning together, grounded in curiosity, connection, and reciprocity. ✨
There’s something pretty special about seeing an HTH GSE M.Ed. alum continue to build bridges between educators across the world, creating opportunities for ideas to travel, evolve, and take on new life in entirely different contexts.
