Project: Industrial Fabric

A trade school is designed to expand specific skillsets through hands-on and academic training. Craftsmanship is honed and refined in these spaces, which are created to accommodate the necessary conditions for optimal artistry and learning. Industrial Fabric as an organic, education-centric environment maximizes the property’s space by composing its built atmosphere out of geometric building species joined together, mimicking the ideas performed in the program of the trade school: welding and woodwork. Working in consideration of a grid formed out of increments of 10’, each building section holds its own, individual program, formulating an easy-to-navigate system throughout. On the lower level, the entry way starts from the front and leads to a clear path for circulation through the back of the property for a sense of consistency in a stacked, style program composition.

Project: Wood & Steel Works

Trade education often hides making from the public, but the Tijuana Trade School closes that gap by drawing education, production, and the city into one shared relationship. Rather than erasing the boundary between public and private, the project turns that boundary into a space that can be inhabited and felt. The ground floor opens outward as a place to gather, encounter exhibitions, and take home the work of students’ hands. Above, the welding and woodworking shops remain private and protected, while large openings in their steel walls allow the public to witness students and masters shaping their craft in real time. Built from stacked shipping containers, the workshops can absorb the demands of the trades while creating a prototype without borders—one that can be replicated and adapted to different climates and communities. Between the two container volumes is a lighter, open-air heart where students can eat, gather, and occasionally exhibit their work. Above both volumes, a raised steel roof shades rather than seals, drawing Tijuana’s heat upward and allowing the building to breathe.

Project: Building the Matrix

The aim is to discover the importance of modes of representation as instrumental design thinking tools. Diverse modalities of representation are essential to testing and discovering spatial opportunities in architectural projects. This makes it possible to experiment with different representational techniques to explore how structure and space can be articulated to depict spatial atmospheres.

Thank you to San Diego High School, La Jolla High School, and Mesa College for visiting our campus and taking the time to learn more about our programs in Architecture, Design, and Construction Management.

Designing a school around the community it serves.

The Logan Memorial Educational Campus is a 241,000-square-foot, community-based educational campus in San Diego’s historic Logan Heights neighborhood. The project reimagines an existing K–8 school while introducing a new child development center and the community’s first neighborhood high school.

NewSchool alumna, Young Eun Abulencia (Master of Architecture, 2008), contributed to a campus shaped through community collaboration, with architecture influenced by Mexican modernism and learning environments designed to support flexible, hands-on education.

Beyond the classroom, the campus extends into the community through a wellness center, health clinic, community rooms, and shared spaces, while sustainable strategies—including more than 55,000 square feet of photovoltaic panels—support the goal of net-zero energy use.

Creativity has always been a constant in Fatema Maksosy’s life.

Now a third-year Architecture student at NewSchool with a minor in Interior Design, Fatema’s path to architecture wasn’t always a straight one. After beginning college as a pre-med and physics major, she began exploring the things she was naturally drawn to and eventually found architecture—a way to bring together her creativity, curiosity, and love for making things.

Her involvement at NewSchool extends well beyond the classroom. Fatema serves as President of AIAS and President of Student Council, where she connects with fellow students, helps organize events and initiatives, and contributes to making campus feel more connected and engaging.

Looking ahead, Fatema hopes to become a licensed architect and work on meaningful projects that have a positive impact on the communities they serve.

Olivia Mandel’s approach to architecture brings together thoughtful design, craftsmanship, historic reverence, and playfulness.

A NewSchool alumni, Mandel graduated in 2015 and spent seven years working at Domestic Architecture under Roy McMakin, where she gained extensive experience in art-forward intention, craftsmanship, furniture/object design, and detail-driven project development. She later established an independent practice and continues to collaborate with local architects on a range of projects.

As an educator, Mandel supports students in developing strong design foundations, clear communication skills, and an understanding of architecture through critical thinking. Her connection to San Diego continues to shape her commitment to building a long-term practice and teaching presence within the local architecture community.
