The original Department of Journalism was established in 1950 and comprised programs in journalism, advertising and public relations. Since 2007, the new School of Journalism & Media Studies includes those programs as well as a specialization in media studies.

What a summer for JMS 495: World Cup! Our students dove headfirst into the world of sports journalism, gaining incredible hands-on experience and learning directly from the best in San Diego media.

Here is a look back at an action-packed June:
- Masterclasses and Q&As with local legends: Annie Heilbrunn at The San Diego Union-Tribune on feature storytelling, plus incredible insights from Mark Ziegler on covering the World Cup.
- Broadcast deep-dives: A massive thank you to FOX 5/KUSI’s Chase Izidoro and Allison Edmonds for the in-class demo reel workshop and an amazing behind-the-scenes station tour!
- The Beautiful Game: Experiencing the action firsthand at the Countdown to ‘26 Colombia vs. Jordan warm-up game at Snapdragon Stadium, and catching the hype at the San Diego FC Soccer Celebration at Belmont Park.

The event will kick off with a live Ignite K-Pop performance and a Mythology Talk hosted by the APIDA Center!
